Preventing child abuse is about more than just knowing what to do when something goes wrong. Itโ€™s also about the steps we take every day to help children feel empowered and safe.

Prevention can look like:
๐Ÿ”ต Teaching children about healthy boundaries.
๐Ÿ”ต Helping them identify trusted adults.
๐Ÿ”ต Creating a safe space for them to speak up.
๐Ÿ”ต Learning the signs that a children may need support.

Knowledge, open communication, and supportive relationships with the children in your life can make an incredible impact in preventing child abuse. At Small Talk, we believe every adult has a role to play in keeping children safe and that supporting children is everyoneโ€™s responsibility.

Every child deserves to feel safe, supported, and heard. ๐Ÿ’™

Today, on World Mental Health Day, we're taking a moment to recognize something that matters every day: children's mental health deserves our attention, care, and support.

When a child experiences abuse or trauma, it can impact how they feel, think, and navigate the world. Healing takes time, and children shouldn't have to navigate that journey alone.

At Small Talk, supporting children means looking beyond the immediate crisis and helping them take steps toward healing. Our therapists provide free, trauma-informed therapy to survivors, giving children and families a safe place to process difficult experiences, build coping skills, and move forward.

But supporting children's mental health also happens in our homes, schools, neighborhoods, and communities. We can all help by listening without judgement and taking children's feelings seriously.

This World Mental Health Day, let's keep building communities where every child has the support they need to heal and thrive.

What happens when a child comes to Small Talk?

Coming to Small Talk can feel like a big step for a child and their caregivers. Our goal is to make the experience as safe, supportive, and child-centered as possible.

While every child's experience is unique, here's what families can generally expect:

๐Ÿก Welcome
Children and families are greeted by caring professionals who create a safe, welcoming environment.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Interview
When appropriate, a trained forensic interviewer talks with the child in a safe, child-friendly setting, using developmentally appropriate questions and allowing the child to share what happened in their own words.

๐Ÿค Advocacy
Our advocates help children and caregivers understand what to expect, connect them with resources, and provide ongoing support throughout the process.

๐Ÿ’™ Support
Our therapists provide free, trauma-informed therapy to help children and families begin their healing journey.

๐ŸŒฑ Healing
Small Talk works alongside law enforcement, child protective services, prosecutors, medical professionals, and other community partners to help children and families move forward.

Every step is designed with the well-being of the child and family in mind.

We can't take away what happened, but we can surround children with caring people and meaningful support as they take their next steps toward healing. ๐Ÿ’™

That's what child-centered advocacy looks like.

So, what exactly is a Childrenโ€™s Advocacy Center? ๐Ÿ’™

A Childrenโ€™s Advocacy Center, or CAC, is a place where children who may have experienced abuse can receive support from a team of professionals who work together to help them and their families.

At Small Talk, that means bringing together professionals from different areas including forensic interviewing, advocacy, mental health, child protective services, law enforcement, prosecution, and medical care to coordinate the response to a childโ€™s needs.

Instead of asking a child and their family to navigate a complicated system on their own, we bring the team together around the child.

Our goal is simple:

Listen. Support. Connect. Protect.

We help children tell their stories in a safe, child-centered environment, connect families with resources and support, and work alongside our community partners to help children move toward healing.

That's what a Children's Advocacy Center does.

And that's what we do at Small Talk. ๐Ÿ’™

On October 18, local journalist Anna Nichols will lace up her running shoes and take on the Detroit Marathon for Small Talk!

Last year, Anna ran the Detroit Half Marathon for Small Talk and raised $1,390 to support children and families impacted by abuse. This year, she's going the distance and she's hoping to raise $2,500 for Small Talk.

Every mile Anna runs represents a child who deserves to feel safe, supported, and believed.

Your donation can help provide the services children and families need to heal, including forensic interviews, therapy, advocacy, and prevention programs.

๐Ÿ’™ Help Anna reach her $2,500 goal and make every mile count.

๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿพ You get to choose Junoโ€™s Halloween costume! ๐Ÿพ๐ŸŽƒ

Our Canine Advocate Juno is ready to celebrate Halloween, but she needs your help deciding what to wear! This year, weโ€™re turning the costume planning over to YOU. What should Juno dress up as?

We have a few ideas floating around, including:
๐Ÿฏ Winnie the Pooh & friends
๐Ÿ„ Super Mario
๐ŸŒณ The Lorax

โ€ฆbut we want to hear your ideas, too!

Drop your costume suggestion in the comments! The Small Talk team will take your ideas into consideration and choose Junoโ€™s Halloween costume.

Voting/suggestions close at the end of the day on October 11!

Then, keep an eye out for Juno in her winning costume at Halloween events throughout the community and, of course, right here on our socials! ๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿถ

What do you think Juno should be for Halloween?

Prevention starts long before a crisis. It starts with children knowing:

๐Ÿ’™ My body belongs to me.
๐Ÿ’™ I can say no.
๐Ÿ’™ I can tell a trusted adult when something doesn't feel right.
๐Ÿ’™ I will be believed.
๐Ÿ’™ I deserve to feel safe.

It also starts with adults having the knowledge and confidence to recognize concerns, listen to children, and connect them with support.

At Small Talk, that's part of what we mean when we talk about prevention. We're working toward a community where children are safer, adults are better equipped to protect them, and children who experience trauma have access to the support they need to heal.

Because healthy, connected communities don't just respond to crises, they help build the conditions that support children's well-being in the first place.

This September, we're proud to stand alongside our community in recognizing Su***de Prevention Month and the importance of connection, support, and hope.
