Confidence grows when children and young people have supportive adults in their lives who encourage them, listen to them and help them recognize their strengths.

On National Youth Confidence Day, we’re celebrating the Protective Factors that help children and youth build resilience and thrive. Strong relationships, supportive communities and opportunities to build social and emotional skills can help young people feel confident in who they are and their ability to navigate changes.

Let’s continue creating safe, supportive environments where every child has the opportunity to grow, build confidence and thrive. To learn more about the Strengthening Families Protective Factors, visit https://www.childrentrustmichigan.org/support-family-foundations.

Between school, activities and appointments, children can be in and out of the car a lot! Helping them ride safely starts with making sure they’re in the right car seat or booster seat for their age, height, and weight.

A few important reminders:
• Keep children rear-facing for as long as possible, until they reach the maximum height or weight limit of their seat, or until they are at least two years old.
• Once they outgrow their rear‑facing seat, children should use a forward‑facing car seat with a five‑point harness until they reach the seat’s height or weight limit or are at least five years old.
• Children should use a booster seat with a lap and shoulder belt until they are at least eight years old. Most children are ready to ride without a booster when they reach 4 feet and 9 inches tall and can pass the five-step test.
• Children younger than 13 should ride in the back seat to help protect them from the force of a frontal air bag.

Parents and caregivers — if you are part of a Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) benefits program, you may qualify for free diapers through the Diaper Assistance Program!

Qualified caregivers can pick up diapers at their local MDHHS office once a month for up to four months. To get started, visit your local office and ask for the Diaper Assistance Request Form (MDHHS-Pub-6251).

If you know a family who could benefit, please pass this information along. A little support can go a long way!

Embracing a culture of prevention means helping every child feel safe, respected and included. That’s why National Stop Bullying Day is such an important reminder of the role we all play in keeping children safe.

Bullying prevention works best when students, parents, teachers, and community members come together. At CTM, we use the Strengthening Families Protective Factors model to support children’s social and emotional skills — an important part of reducing bullying.

Talking with children about bullying helps them understand their feelings and the feelings of others. These small conversations build empathy and positive interactions.

It's National School Lunch Week!

Having enough to eat is an important part of prevention. When children have reliable access to meals at school, stress goes down and families can focus on growing and thriving.

The good news? Michigan guarantees free breakfast and lunch for all public school students through the Michigan School Meals program! Reliable access to healthy meals during the school day reduces stress for families and supports strong, healthy development for kids.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

At Children Trust Michigan, we are committed to breaking the cycle of abuse and building safer futures for children and families across our state.

Every child deserves a home that feels safe, calm, and supportive. When that safety is disrupted, families benefit from care and resources. That’s why our prevention programs focus on education, support, and building strong connections for the whole family.

By supporting families and strengthening prevention, we help create safer homes and brighter futures for Michigan children.

For more information on local support services, please visit Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence at mcedsv.org/resources. You can also call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233). Call toll free, 24 hours a day, anywhere in the U.S.

Prevention is powerful - because it often inspires more prevention! When families feel supported, they often want to give back and strengthen their community in return.

Our partners at Child Advocacy-Gratiot County recently saw this in action when a parent who completed their 24:7 Dad parenting program chose to return as a mentor! He shared what he had learned, helped support the group and even created social media advertising to help spread the word about the program.

Stories like this show how strong social connections and supportive programs help families build resilience and thrive.

Healthy food helps children stay focused, energized and ready to learn. Simple choices like whole grains, fresh fruits, lean proteins, and colorful veggies can make a big difference in a child’s day.

Small steps add up. When families have access to easy, nutritious options, children thrive.
