The Capitol Technology University, AWS, and PGC OIT PGC Future Tech Hackathon successfully concluded on September 18, bringing together students, mentors, and partners for a full day of interactive building, collaboration, and networking focused on creating innovative solutions to real challenges facing Prince George’s County.

Throughout the day, students and mentors were engaged, thoughtful, and energized as they worked together to turn ideas into solutions.

What made the day especially meaningful was seeing students move from learning about AI to becoming believers in how AI can be used to address real community challenges.

This experience would not have been possible without the dedication, expertise, and partnership of everyone involved. Together, we created an opportunity for students to see themselves as innovators and problem-solvers who can use technology to make a difference in their communities.

A Special Thank you to our host- Dr. William Butler of Capitol Technology University

What an incredible opportunity to celebrate innovation, achievement, and partnership at Bowie State University!

The recent showcase highlighted talented students from throughout BSU’s Department of Computer Science & Technology, including participants in the ExLent Scholars Program. From freshmen just beginning their academic journeys to graduate students preparing to enter the workforce, the event showcased the tremendous talent and potential developing right here in our region.

Dr. Shumba and BSU administrators recognized the Prince George’s County Office of Information Technology (OIT) for our continued partnership and collaboration in supporting ExLent Scholars—and we are proud to be part of their journey!

This partnership came to life over the summer when PGC-OIT hosted four ExLent Scholars, providing them with an opportunity to gain valuable exposure to technology in local government, connect classroom learning to real-world experiences, and learn alongside OIT professionals.

One of the highlights of the showcase was hearing from Tarron, a former graduate student and Patriot Technology Club member, who shared how his experience in the program helped prepare him for his current position at MITRE. His story was a wonderful example of what can happen when education, mentorship, experience, and opportunity come together.

Partnerships like this are about more than internships—they’re about creating pathways, developing future technology professionals, and investing in the next generation of innovators.

OIT is proud to partner with Bowie State University and looks forward to continuing to create opportunities that connect education, technology, and public service.

Together, We Elevate Technology!
