Our Muhly Grass is Pretty in Pink for this What's in Bloom Wednesday! 🌾🌸

The Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) is a stunning ornamental grass known for its bright pink, feathery flower plumes that look like clouds of cotton candy! Fall is when this beauty steals the show! Blooming from September through November, depending on the climate, Pink Muhly Grass transforms landscapes into a sea of vibrant pink! Native to the eastern and central United States, including Florida, this perennial grass is more than just a pretty sight! It's incredibly resilient, tolerating drought, heat, and even salty coastal conditions. Its dense clumps also provide shelter for small wildlife, and its seeds feed birds!

Fun Fact: Despite its delicate, fluffy appearance, Pink Muhly Grass is large and in charge! Its flower stalks can reach up to 5 feet tall, and when planted in groups, it can create an intertwined web of grass that's almost impossible to venture through.

It makes the perfect backdrop for fall photos in the Majeed Discovery Garden this month!

Follow me and my shadow to the Spicebush for an evening of cuddling and dance! πŸ¦‹

The Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus) floats through the gardens with stunning beauty. These butterflies are native to Eastern North America and belong to the Papilionidae family, which includes some of the largest butterflies on earth. They engage in something called cuddling, which is depicted in the image, where the butterfly will seek out nutrients on wet surfaces. The males of this species attract mates through courtship dances in the air or on a plant. Spicebush Swallowtails mainly lays their eggs on the Spicebush, but have a few other plants they use as their hosts. You can find these butterflies in the butterfly garden and the Majeed Discovery Garden!
