Perry Park Metro District Residents,
Perry Park Metro District, under direction of the State Engineer's Office (SEO), must begin regular maintenance actions to protect the dam at Gilloon Pond. Otherwise, PPMD could be ordered to "breach" the dam and drain the pond. Activities planned for this fall are:
Removal of willows and junipers growing on the dam. Stumps will be removed using a stump grinder to remove roots below ground level. Holes will be filled to match grades on the dam slope.
Repairs to a 30-foot section of the dam on the upstream side to restore the original grade. This will involve removal of the organic material and backfill with compactable soil.
Tree and shrub health on and below the dam must be monitored annually. The large cottonwood and one small crabapple tree can remain for now.
Any future trees and shrubs will be removed. Tree roots can affect the structural integrity of dams and allow water to seep through root pathways. These can eventually lead to leaks in the dam.
The Board has adopted a Monitoring and Maintenance schedule based on the SEO Inspection Report done in March, 2026. Other concerns were raised in the report but do not require action at this time. We ask that you be patient and avoid active work zones. Any closures for safety will be short-term and allow you to resume your normal walks across the dam.
Sincerely,
The Perry Park Metro District Board of Directors
