Las Palomas is a very family oriented department. We now also provide Swift Water Rescue / Rope Rescue for the entirety of Sierra County

We provide Fire response for the Las Palomas area, and EMS/Extrication for the southern half of Sierra County, NM.

Yesterday afternoon, we responded with Sierra Vista Hospital EMS and Caballo Fire Department to Interstate 25 at the 58 Mile Marker South Bound for a motor vehicle accident. All occupants were okay.

Please, when there is an accident scene marked by an emergency vehicle before the accident with its emergency lights activated, slow down and move over.

We had several close calls yesterday both with us and our apparatus, and with other motorists almost causing accidents with each other scrambling to get over and slow down.

Everyone, volunteer or career, has a family to go home to at the end of the day, and we need our community's help to make sure that happens!

🚒 Fleet Friday with Las Palomas Fire Department! 🚒

Rolling out this week is Engine 72 — our sharp 2025 HME Ahrens-Fox Core 22!

This modern pumper carries 1,000 gallons of water and is powered by a 1,500 GPM pump, giving our crews the water they need to knock down fires fast and protect our community.

A few quick facts about what that means on the fireground:

A 1,500 GPM pump can deliver the equivalent of roughly 25 garden hoses running full blast at the same time — serious flow for structure fires, vehicle fires, and defensive operations.

The 1,000-gallon tank gives firefighters a solid initial attack water supply before they need to hook to a hydrant or set up a water shuttle.

HME Ahrens-Fox builds tough, purpose-designed apparatus known for solid engineering, crew comfort, and reliable performance when seconds count.

Engine 72 is ready 24/7 to answer the call. Huge thanks to our dedicated firefighters who keep this apparatus in top shape and our community safer every day!

We're proud to support our local team by assisting Sierra Vista Hospital EMS with the EMS standby for tonight’s game. Keeping players, fans, and everyone safe is just as important as the final score.

At around 9:30pm tonight, 10/4/26 we responded with Sierra Vista Hospital EMS, Sierra County Sheriff's Office, New Mexico State Police, Arrey Fire Department, and Caballo Fire Department to Interstate 25 Mile Marker 61 South Bound for a motor vehicle accident involving two vehicles. Patients have been treated and first responders have cleared scene, however law enforcement will be in scene for an extended period to investigate and remove the vehicles, so please use caution in the area.

Around 2pm today, 9/29/26 we responded with Sierra Vista Hospital EMS, Arrey-Derry, and Caballo Fire to Interstate 25 for a Motor Vehicle accident. The vehicle had spun out, and subsequently slid down an approximately 100ft embankment. Both occupants were okay. One had to be helped up the embankment with the use of our rope rescue personnel.

Please use caution when driving in the rain, it changes the way your vehicle drives, and significantly increases the stopping distance of your vehicle. Reduce speed, increase following distance from other cars, and adjust as conditions change!

This evening, Las Palomas responded for mutual aid with a water tender, alongside Arrey-Derry, and Caballo Fire crews, who also brought water to assist DAFR with this large commercial vehicle fire.

On Saturday, we participated in burn building operations and training with Monticello Fire, Truth or Consequences Fire, Elephant Butte Fire, Peralta, and Bernalillo.

Everyone involved learned a lot and had a great time!

We'd like to extend a huge thann you to TorC Fire Assistant Chief Ron Hoskins and Elephant Butte Fire Chief Roger Long for making this an incredible learning opportunity for all!

On Sunday morning, we participated with Truth or Consequences, and Elephant Butte Fire department in extrication exercises. Where departments shared techniques and worked together to successfully simulate removing a victim trapped in a vehicle.

All of this, in an effort to increase interoperability as a county, to provide the best service possible to our community as a whole. We are all different departments, but we all serve one common goal, one common purpose!

With several storms expected over the next couple of days, please take a few extra minutes to think about your safety before getting behind the wheel. Heavy rain can reduce visibility, make roads slick, increase stopping distances, and create standing or flowing water very quickly.

If you have to drive during heavy rain:

• Slow down and leave extra distance between you and the vehicle ahead.

• Turn on your headlights so you can see and be seen.

• Avoid sudden braking, acceleration, or lane changes.

• If visibility becomes too poor, safely pull over and wait for conditions to improve.

• Watch for standing water, especially in low-lying areas, underpasses, and around arroyos.

• NEVER drive through a flooded roadway. Turn around and find another route. You may not be able to tell how deep the water is or whether the road underneath has been washed out.

• Never drive around barricades blocking a flooded road.

• Give emergency crews plenty of room and be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions.
Remember: Arriving a few minutes late is always better than not arriving at all.

Stay alert, slow down, and give yourself extra time during these storms. Turn Around, Don't Drown!

Interoperability between agencies in this county is paramount! We have had two EMS calls in the last two days that required working work Sierra Vista Hospital EMS as we normally do, and also working with Native Air to provide helicopter transport to get patients to higher level of care.

Thank you to Native Air 35- Alamogordo for providing air medical services today for an EMS call as well as Arrey Fire Department and Caballo Fire Department for coordinating with Native and setting up a safe landing zone for us today!
