DOWNTOWN DETROIT

The world's largest Kinara now stands proudly in Detroit for a second year in a row. Happy Kwanzaa! ❤️🖤💚

Designed and built by Black architects, engineers, and carpenters, the 30-foot-tall tall solar-powered Kinara is a cultural beacon honoring the celebration of Afrikan American culture and heritage. The Kinara will be up throughout the seven-day holiday - come and see it!

The historic project came to be through the work of Alkébu-lan Village in collaboration with Downtown Detroit Partnership and the City of Detroit with the support of the Charles H. Wright Museum of Afrikan American History.

This week, the Wright Museum will be hosting a full schedule of programming celebrating Kwanzaa, including family programming, a cultural showcase, holiday marketplace, and more!

HAPPY KWANZAA WEEK! 12/26 - 01/01

During this festive week of Kwanzaa celebrations, we take a moment to reflect, commune together as families, communities, and honor our ansestors.

Kwanzaa has seven principles - we reflect on each principle, each day.

To help observe each principle, a 7 candle holder referred to as kinara us used. One candle is lit per day to reflect on that principle.

The culmination of the celebration is observed on the 6th day, January 1st in a communal feast called Karamu.

These principles are -

• Umoja (Unity)
• Kujichagulia (Self-Determination)
• Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility)
• Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics)
• Nia (Purpose)
• Kuumba (Creativity)
• Imani (Faith)

Origins:
Maulana Ndabezitha Karenga, an American activist, author and professor of Africana studies is the creator of the pan-African and African-American holiday of Kwanzaa.

Kwanzaa mirrors African "first fruit" traditions. The rituals of the holiday promote African traditions through the mentioned principles.
