25 years ago today, our nation changed forever.
On September 11, 2001, 343 FDNY firefighters answered their final alarm. They climbed the stairs while thousands were coming down. They knew the danger, yet continued forward because people needed them.
That courage, sacrifice, and commitment to duty remain at the heart of the fire service today.
IAFF Local 1605 remembers the nearly 3,000 lives lost that day, the firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and other first responders who answered the call, and those who have since lost their lives from 9/11 related illnesses.
Here at home, Hagerstown is home to a 9/11 memorial, giving our community a place to honor those we lost and ensuring future generations understand the sacrifice made that day.
Today, we remember our fallen brothers and sisters, their families, and everyone whose life was forever changed.
343 firefighters. One final alarm. A sacrifice we will never forget.
