Joining in solemn remembrance, we honor and pay tribute to LVMPD Officer Charleston Vernon Hartfield. End of Watch: Oct. 1, 2017.

Officer Hartfield joined LVMPD in January 2006 and worked in the patrol division until 2015, when he transferred to the Project Management and Video Bureau. During his 11 years with the department, Officer Hartfield helped develop a memorial wall honoring fallen officers at Southeast Area Command and authored a book about his life as a police officer.

A decorated 16-year U.S. Army combat veteran, Officer Hartfield served with the 82nd Airborne Division in Iraq and as a First Sergeant in the Nevada Army National Guard’s 100th Quartermaster Company. Deeply committed to his community, he also mentored youth as a local football coach.

On Oct. 1, 2017, while off duty and attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival with his wife, a mass shooting unfolded. True to his calling, Officer Hartfield immediately took action to help rescue fellow citizens before he was fatally struck. He is survived by his wife and their two children.

A commitment to the Las Vegas community leaves a legacy that spans generations. Today, we honor the memory and sacrifice of Night Watchman Joe Mulholland of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. End of Watch: Oct. 1, 1905.

On Oct. 1, 1905, Watchman Mulholland arrested a man and took him into custody earlier that evening, but chose to release him from the cold, damp city jail. The man went home, obtained a gun and ambushed Watchman Mulholland at a local saloon with open fire. He succumbed to his wounds just two hours later, marking a heartbreaking milestone as one of the first fallen officers in Southern Nevada’s law enforcement community.

Watchman Mulholland’s courage and commitment to justice at the dawn of our city's history will never be forgotten. His extraordinary courage, profound compassion and unwavering devotion to duty continues to echo through the ages.

Valor in service lives on through the lives protected. Today we honor and pay tribute to LVMPD Deputy Sheriff John T. Allen. End of Watch: Sept. 18, 1928.

In the summer of 1928, Deputy Allen traveled from his home in Logandale, Nevada to Las Vegas to report that two men had stolen 14 horses from his ranch. Because of the remote location of the ranch, the district attorney deputized Allen so he could serve the warrants and apprehend the suspects.

Deputy Allen arrested one of the two suspects and brought him to Las Vegas for booking, but the suspect was later released and traveled to his home in Arizona. On Sept. 18, 1928, the suspect severely beat Deputy Allen and shot him to death while he attempted to serve the warrant. The suspect, who claimed that Deputy Allen fired at him first, was tried and acquitted.

Deputy Allen was 61 years old. He leaves behind a legacy defined by courage and an extraordinary dedication to service and justice.
