Karlie Polyak joined the LVMPD in 2022, looking for an opportunity to be part of something bigger and support the officers who serve our community every day. Before joining Metro, Karlie worked at 5.11 Tactical. Although she loved her job, she was ready for a more secure career where she could grow, build a future, and hopefully retire one day.

Since joining LVMPD, Karlie has called the Logistics Bureau home. She currently works as a Supply Technician and looks forward to exploring other positions and opportunities within the department in the future. After recently welcoming a baby, Karlie is focused on finding the right balance between her career and family while looking forward to where her journey with Metro takes her.

What Karlie loves most about LVMPD is the department’s commitment to employee wellness. She appreciates working for an organization that recognizes the importance of taking care of its people. For those also considering a career with LVMPD, Karlie’s says to, “Just do it! Taking that chance might end up being one of the best decisions you ever make.”

Thank you for all you do for the LVMPD and community, Karlie!

Know Your CO!

Corrections Officer J. Owens joined the LVMPD in 2020, bringing with him 23 years of experience as a juvenile probation corrections officer in California. After retiring, Owens pursued another longtime dream of becoming a railroad conductor. However, he was furloughed during the COVID-19 pandemic, leading him down an unexpected path.

While visiting Las Vegas, Owens noticed a sign advertising career opportunities with Metro. He decided to apply for both the Police Recruit and Corrections Recruit positions. The call for Corrections came first, and he hasn’t looked back since.

Owens is currently assigned to the South Tower Bureau and hopes to one day become a Training and Counseling Officer at the Corrections Academy where he can help shape and guide the next generation of corrections officers.

What Owens enjoys most about his work is the opportunity to make a positive impact on inmates by encouraging them to change their perspectives and behaviors. For him, the most rewarding moments are when he sees that spark of understanding and is able to connect with an inmate in a way that encourages meaningful change.

Owens hopes his journey inspires others to consider a career in law enforcement. His advice? Don’t be intimidated by the environment inside the jail. Come in with the right attitude, a positive mindset, and the energy to make a difference. With that approach, he believes everything else will fall into place.

Joanna Nowak joined the LVMPD in 2018, after spending years as a stay-at-home mom. During that time, she also ran her own catering business and was actively involved in her Polish community and children’s school. When her kids were older, Joanna decided it was time to build a career of her own. A close friend encouraged her to consider LVMPD, telling her she would be a great fit.

Joanna hired on as a part-time Sewer Worker before transferring to Cintas, which was contracted with the department, where she spent two years as a Sewing Room Supervisor. During that time, she learned more about the many opportunities available within Metro, including the Supply Technician position. After two years as a supervisor, Joanna decided to return to the Metro family and is now a Supply Technician. She has eyes on other positions, with hopes of continuing to grow her career with LVMPD.

What Joanna loves most about LVMPD is the community. She enjoys helping officers with their uniform needs and getting to know the people she works with every day. She also appreciates the teamwork among her coworkers and the support of their Supply Manager.

Thank you for all you do for the LVMPD and community, Joanna!

HONORING A FALLEN HERO

Today, we unveiled Officer Austin Zade Abdelnabi’s portrait on the Wall of Honor at LVMPD Headquarters, honoring his life, his service, and the ultimate sacrifice he made for the Las Vegas community on August 4, 2026.

Officer Abdelnabi's wife, Sage, and his family joined us for this moment as we added his portrait to a place reserved for those whose service and sacrifice will forever be part of our department’s history. Sheriff Kevin McMahill made a promise to Officer Abdelnabi’s family that we will never forget him. That promise is one we carry with us every day.

These portraits ensure that future generations of LVMPD employees and visitors will know his name and remember the officer who gave everything in service to others.

To Sage and the Abdelnabi family, we stand with you, the community stands with you, and we will never forget.
