The mission of the Friends of Pruyn House, in partnership with the Town of Colonie, is to restore and conserve the Pruyn House Complex as an educational, cultural and social center. The Friends of Pruyn House and the Town of Colonie invite you to Meet the Curator, a talk and reception on October 15th, 5:30-7:30pm in the Pruyn House Parlor. You'll learn about Jessica Nelson’s PhD research, which worked to define what a Dutch identity looked like in the 17th century and how that identity translated to the colonies of New Netherland and St. Eustatius, hear about her prior work in museums, and see what her plans are for the Pruyn House. If you can't join us in person, you can register for the Zoom talk, happening concurrently by scanning the QR code in the poster! Please RSVP if attending in person, so we have enough seats and snacks, by calling: (518) 783-1435 or emailing: [email protected]. Hope to see you then!

The end of summer is upon us, and that means Old Fashioned Sunday at the Pruyn House, and we will be here rain or shine! The beloved, free event returns this year on September 13th from 12-4pm with something to entice everyone in the family. We’ll have historical interpreters, craft demonstrations including blacksmithing, weaving and spinning, sheep shearing, and tin smithing, and house tours for the history buffs. Children can partake in a scavenger hunt activity throughout the site for a prize, craft with the garden club, be wowed by the magician and the wizard, get their faces painted, visit the schoolmarm, and go for a pony ride. Shoppers can visit the range of crafters and vendors who will have their goods for sale, including George’s Market, Blue Creek Garden Club, Fort Orange Garden Club, Mort’s Maple Syrup, Claudia Russell’s Jam, Cositas by Luz Leather, Martha’s Treasures, Antique Paper & Postcards, and more. And the hungry will be able to purchase burgers, dogs, popcorn, ice cream, pizza, and a wide range of baked goods from the vendors on site. Join us for a fun day of Old-Fashioned entertainment, including performances from the Colonie Town Bands. Parking on site is extremely limited due to the event, so visitors are asked to park at Southgate Elementary School and take the free shuttle to the Pruyn House! Hopefully the rain decides not to join us, but we hope you will!

Colonie Historical Society and the William K. Sanford Town Library have another upcoming event of interest to us history buffs:

The Troubled WW II B-29 Bomber
Wednesday, August 26, @ 10:30AM
Chronicle the development of the famous B-29 bomber and its immense difficulties in developing the super fortress bomber to operational status.

Meet Helen Dortch Longstreet, a worker in the B-29 bomber war plant at the age of 80 becoming the best riveter in the plant.
In addition to Helen, hear the stories about many of the women who served in World War II. The presentation will discuss the B-29's role in the only two atomic bomb raids in history. Hear how one man on the second atomic bomb run changed the course of history with three words.

Registration now open through the William K. Sanford Town Library:

Join Ron Gabriele for discussion on the little known The Second Battle of Gettysburg.
