CALHOUN VOLUNTEER FIRE/RESCUE (LAUREL, MS) AWARDED $75,200 FEMA GRANT TO UPGRADE EMERGENCY COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT
(Laurel, MS) September 28, 2026 — Calhoun Volunteer Fire and Rescue announced today that it has been awarded a federal grant totaling $71,619 through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grants (AFG).
The grant funding will be utilized to purchase critical communications equipment to replace worn and outdated radios. A portion of the project will be supported by a local matching contribution of $3,580, bringing the total investment in community safety to $75,200.
“This federal funding represents an incredible investment in the safety of our firefighters, medical personnel and the residents we serve", said Scott Rushing, Assistant Chief. "With these updated radios, our team can regain confidence while responding to emergencies knowing they have efficient, top-tier communications gear, significantly minimizing response risks during emergencies and enhancing overall community safety."
The primary goal of FEMA's fire grant programs is to enhance the safety of the public and emergency personnel by providing first responders with the vital training, equipment, and staffing required to handle all types of hazards. The new equipment and initiatives funded by this grant are scheduled to be deployed at the beginning of 2027.
