The library services enabled by E-Rate support are indispensable to communities, argued ALA, citing a new study (https://www.ala.org/news/2026/10/new-report-eliminating-e-rate-would-cost-us-economy-42-billion-year) that reveals negative effects on the U.S. economy were the FCC to eliminate the E-Rate program. The analysis, conducted by the Brattle Group on behalf of ALA and other members of the SHLB coalition, estimates that eliminating roughly $2.6 billion in annual support for library and school broadband would shrink the national economy by approximately $4.2 billion annually.
Encouraging the FCC to build upon the successes of E-Rate and preserve the program's focus on universal service, ALA's filing included recommendations for strengthening the program and cautions against conflating broadband connectivity with screentime abuse.
"Broadband connectivity is not an event; it's a process, and one that Congress committed to nearly 30 years ago, when they established E-Rate," said Morris. "There is no replacement for E-Rate, no 'Plan B' to ensure broadband is affordable for libraries and schools. ALA continues to urge every library supporter to tell their U.S. Senators and Representative what broadband access means to you, using the tool at ala.org/erate."
According to a new economic study released this week by the Schools, Health & Libraries Broadband (SHLB) Coalition and the American Library Association, eliminating the federal E-Rate program would have serious negative effects on the U.S. economy.
