Children in foster care need steady advocacy as they move through a complicated system.

CASA volunteers are trained to provide consistent, child-centered support. They take time to understand a child’s life, build trust, and share what they learn with the court so each child’s needs and best interests stay clear.

This work is possible because community members show up with care, commitment, and a willingness to stay engaged throughout the case.

ICYMI: Evan Williams’ connection to CASA runs through both advocacy and community support.

Through Evan Williams Catering, she has helped make Winds Across the Prairie a meaningful event supporting CASA’s mission. As a longtime CASA volunteer, she has also supported children and families navigating the child welfare system.

In her Q&A, Evan reflects on building trust with children, staying open to learning, and approaching families with compassion instead of judgment.

We’re grateful for the many ways Evan continues to show up for CASA and our community!

Fifty years of showing up for survivors, families, and our community.

In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, this article features The Willow Domestic Violence Center, celebrating 50 years of service across Douglas, Franklin, and Jefferson counties.

Founded in 1976 as Women’s Transitional Care Services, The Willow has grown into a full continuum of care for survivors of domestic violence and human trafficking. Their work includes a 24-hour hotline, emergency shelter, court and rural advocacy, youth programming, human trafficking support, and education on healthy relationships.

For CASA, this work matters because domestic violence and child welfare are deeply connected. Children who witness or experience violence need communities ready to respond with safety, support, and early education that can help break cycles of harm.

Prevention is child welfare work, too.

For children and families connected to the child welfare system, substance use affects safety, stability, caregiving, and access to support. That’s why education, prevention, and practical resources matter before a crisis worsens.

This month’s article features a message from our partners at DCCCA, whose Community-Based Services team works year-round on substance use prevention, su***de prevention, mental health promotion, and traffic safety.

DCCCA shares the realities facing Kansas families, including the fact that 1 in 5 Kansans lives with a substance use disorder. They offer concrete ways community members can take action, from safely disposing of unused medications to requesting naloxone, ordering medication lock bags, and signing up for prevention trainings.

Stronger communities are built when families have access to resources earlier and when more people know how to respond with care.

Every child in foster care deserves a steady, caring adult who stands up for their needs and ensures their voice is heard. CASA volunteers fill this crucial role.

As a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA), you will take time to understand a child's situation, check in regularly, and stay connected with everyone involved in the case. You will share what you learn with the court to help ensure decisions are based on a clear understanding of the child’s needs, experiences, and best interests.

Our October focus is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and National Substance Abuse Prevention Month, inviting us to examine the supports children and families need when safety, stress, caregiving, and child welfare concerns intersect.

For children connected to the child welfare system, experiences at home can be shaped by overlapping factors, including violence, substance use, instability, fear, and the need for earlier support. This month invites us to discuss prevention, family safety, and community resources that help children and caregivers access care before harm deepens.

This month’s Step Up email explores why domestic violence awareness and substance abuse prevention matter in conversations about child welfare. We’ll examine how stronger care systems can better support families, help trusted adults recognize concerns, and keep children’s safety and stability central.
