Today, the Fire Science Department was asked to teach a Fire Safety class to the L.H.S. Health Occupations class. Topics focused on were:
Facility policies, the RACE and PASS acronym, being observant of living conditions in Home Health settings (electrical safety, exits, hoarding conditions, etc.), patients who smoke with oxygen, observant with non-ambulatory patients, and fire extinguisher use.
They then had the opportunity to put their Fire Extinguisher lecture in practice by performing the practical application.
Thank you to Mrs. Elyse Eagleson Waldherr and the Health Occupations Department for the opportunity.

Monday and Tuesday of this week, the Fire Science Senior Fire II class was invited to Parkview Junior High School by the P.E. Department to present Fire Safety and Basic First Aid information for Fire Prevention Week/Month.
The Seniors used this opportunity to get checked off for the Public Presentation practicals as well as pass on some valuable information. Topics covered were kitchen related emergencies, Fire Extinguishers, the importance of a meeting place, smoke detectors, and common injuries encountered during babysitting. We also covered basic bandaging and bleeding control along with the importance of CPR and the Heimlich maneuver.
Students were then allowed the opportunity to test their skills as firefighters by trying on some turnout gear, practicing rolling and unrolling hose during hose bowling, and spraying some water from the fire hose.
A big thank you to Mrs. Haylee Kocher, Mr. Brandt Cochran, Mr. Bryant Jenkins along with the Parkview Administration for allowing us the opportunity to come in, pass on some valuable information and get our students some experience up in front of an audience educating others.
Thank you!

We want to give a huge shoutout to Andrew Burgett and Masons Automotive Repair on Union Chapel Road in Sumner along with Ryan at Bestway Trucking, and Jeff Shick and Andy DeLoriea at the School District Bus Barn for the amazing help the last two days. Yesterday, Andrew and Mason's installed a wheel cover simulator on the rear duals on RES1CUE. Today, we had some mechanical issues with RES1CUE. Between the Bus Barn and phone conversations with Bestway Trucking and Masons Automotive, they had us up and running in no time. These businesses didnt charge a dime. This type of consultation could have easily cost our program and the District hundreds of dollars, but because they want to see these programs succeed they were very gracious. When you see these guys, tell them thank you.

Today, our students learned one of the most valuable lessons I/we could teach them, GIVING! We had two former students and 4 current students take time out of their weekend to give back to a young man that wanted nothing more than to eat his birthday cupcakes with Firefighters. We were notified via Facebook by the young mans mother, about his request; so we were able to take Rescue 1 along with 6 other pieces of apparatus, 1 ambulance and 15-20 responders to the party. Thank You to Lawrence Allison Fire Association, Bridgeport Fire, Christy Fire, Lawrence County Ambulance Service, and Lawrence County 911 for allowing us be a part.

Today, our Haz-Mat class completed their "recognize and identify" praticals. Using nothing more than binoculars, range finders, their Emergency Response Guidebooks and their knowledge, the students attempted to identify Hazardous Materials placards that the instructors placed in various locations around campus. These placards were not just placed in the upright position, because vehicles and cargo can come to rest in all diffrent places and positions. The students were tasked with identifying the Hazardous Classification, UN number, material name, guide book number, initial isolation zones and distance from the placard. This exercise is an enjoyable and fun way on how to maneuver through the guidebook.

We try to run our program as an immersive experience, as much like a Fire Department as possible. That means daily truck checks, radio checks and station chores. We have students that show up 30-45 minutes early for school to do vehicle and radio checks. By doing that, we find equipment that needs immediate and reoccurring maintenance. Our vehicles actually respond to calls, so making sure everything is working properly is paramount. Today, an emergency warning light issue was found, so we jumped right in during planning period to get it in running order.
Not only do they do vehicle checks, but the students treat our classroom like tgeir living quarters. The clean the tables, the windows, vacuum the floor and take out the trash, just like at a station. Our custodians have very little to do in our classes, and we know they appreciate it.
