DRUNK OR HIGH, IT’S ALL DWI

A vehicle full of kids, ma*****na, alcohol and no seatbelts. Three people were transported to the hospital. Luckily, no one was killed.

Did we mention, the operator was 17 years old and driving on a DJ license?

Alcohol and ma*****na can impair judgment, reaction time, coordination, and decision making.

The investigation is ongoing.

MINOR INJURY ACCIDENT INVOLVING ELECTRIC SCOOTER

At approximately 3:45 p.m., officers responded to a minor injury accident involving a juvenile operating an electric scooter. The juvenile was attempting to cross State Route 5 from Wolcott Street when the scooter struck the driver’s side of a pickup truck traveling westbound on Route 5 with a green traffic signal.

The juvenile, who was wearing a helmet, was evaluated by EMS personnel and transported to a local hospital for further evaluation as a precaution. No significant injuries were reported. The incident occurred after school dismissal traffic had already cleared the area.

As a quick safety reminder, parents and riders are encouraged to review New York State laws regarding bicycles, e-bikes and electric scooters. Please obey traffic signals and the rules of the road, wear a helmet, stay alert, and make sure young riders understand the laws and safety requirements before heading out.

TRAFFIC SAFETY UPDATE – WEST BERGEN RD & GRISWOLD RD

The LeRoy Police Department is pleased to share an important traffic safety update regarding the intersection of West Bergen Road and Griswold Road.

The LeRoy Police Department has raised safety concerns regarding this intersection on previous occasions and, most recently, formally requested a review in July 2025. This request was made due to the history of serious motor vehicle crashes in the area and our continued concern for the safety of those who travel these roads.

Following a comprehensive analysis by the Genesee County Department of Public Works, with input from Emergency Management, Sheriffs Office, Communications, Engineering, and local stakeholders, the County has determined that converting the intersection to a four-way stop is the appropriate next step to improve safety.

Weather permitting, Genesee County DPW crews are scheduled to install STOP and STOP AHEAD signs on West Bergen Road on October 6. All four approaches to the intersection will have stop signs marked with orange flags to increase visibility. Variable message boards will also be placed on West Bergen Road in advance to alert motorists of the upcoming traffic pattern change.

We appreciate Genesee County officials for listening to the concerns that have been raised, completing a thorough review of the intersection, and taking action to improve safety.

This will be a significant change in the traffic pattern at this intersection. We ask everyone traveling through the area to slow down, remain alert, and allow extra time to become familiar with the new four-way stop.

Our hope is simple: that these changes will help prevent future crashes, injuries, and loss of life.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this information with family, friends, neighbors, and anyone who regularly travels through this area.

Nothing brings a neighborhood together faster than a couple of cop cars in front of another neighbor’s house. 👀🚔

Please stop asking when “Officer” Mummery graduates school. He got held back a couple of grades. Sensitive subject. 💀

Twenty-five years have passed since September 11, 2001, but the memory of that tragic day remains with us forever.

Today, the LeRoy Police Department remembers the 2,977 lives lost, honors the heroes who answered the call, and stands with the families who continue to carry their loss.

May we never forget their lives, their courage, and their sacrifice.

We will never forget. 🇺🇸

Back to School!

Several of our Officers who are typically assigned to road patrol and investigative duties dusted off their uniforms, shined up their boots (but apparently forgot their hats), and joined our School Resource Officers for the first day of school.

School safety will always be one of our top priorities. We have a School Resource Officer assigned to each campus, with the remainder of our department ready and willing to step up whenever needed to help ensure a safe environment for our students and staff.

It was great to welcome everyone back and kick off another school year on a positive note.

Here’s to a safe and successful school year!

LeRoy, we’ve heard you loud and clear. We continue to receive complaints and concerns regarding e-bikes and e-scooters throughout the Village, and we’re going to be giving the issue some increased attention.

We’re going to start with warnings and education. We want riders—and especially parents—to understand the rules before we move to enforcement. Repeat offenders and continued violations, however, can expect enforcement action.

Our primary focus will be:

* Operators under 16 — New York State law prohibits anyone under 16 from operating an e-bike. A person under 16 may not operate or ride as a passenger on an e-scooter.
* Sidewalks — E-bikes and e-scooters generally cannot be operated on sidewalks unless otherwise authorized by law.
* Roadways over 30 MPH — E-bikes and e-scooters generally cannot be operated on roadways with a posted speed limit greater than 30 MPH unless otherwise authorized by law.
* Unsafe operation — Obey the rules of the road, yield to pedestrians, and use some common sense.

Parents, we need your help. Please have a conversation with your kids about these rules. We’d much rather start with education than enforcement.

We’re also applying for state grant funding to purchase e-bikes or similar equipment for our officers so we have a better way to patrol and address these complaints.

This comes after hearing some version of the following from bike patrol:

“Chief, how exactly do you expect us to keep up with these kids on a pedal bike?”

Meanwhile, the officers are standing there sweating like a hostage from trying to keep up, and the kid on the e-bike hasn’t even broken a sweat.

Fair point.

So, if the grant comes through, maybe we get the officers some e-bikes of their own. Or maybe we go old school and bring back police motorcycles like departments used to patrol on back in the day. At this point, we’ll see what the grant will buy us.

Either way, we need something to fill the fairly large gap between “pedal faster” and “get the Dodge Charger.”

The Chargers can certainly keep up, but chasing an e-bike around the Village in a Charger isn’t exactly our preferred solution.

Until then, we’ll do the best we can with what we have and continue working toward consistent enforcement throughout the Village. We’ll start with education and warnings, but repeat offenders and continued violations should expect enforcement.

Parents, talk to your kids. Riders, know the rules and ride responsibly.

And to our bike patrol officers—for now, keep pedaling.
