No you’re not imagining things Leadville! Free single stream recycling is now available to residents through some private waste haulers thanks to the Producer Responsibility Act ✌🏼💚♻️

🗑️ No this recycling does not go to our landfill - it is hauled to the front range for processing.

💸It is paid for by the companies who produce and sell recyclable materials in Colorado.

🏡 Recycling is still FREE through the Lake County Recycling Center & Drop Sites if you don’t currently pay for trash pickup or your trash hauler doesn’t offer recycling collection.

🌎 In the very near future we hope this same funding stream will support expanded recycling for our entire community 😉

This week is Food Waste Prevention Week! 🥕♻️

These big bins at Cloud City Farm may not look like much, but each year they keep thousands of pounds of food scraps out of the Lake County landfill and turn them into compost that builds healthy soil at the farm and in gardens across the county. 🌱

Why it matters:

🗑️ Waste at the Lake County landfill doubled from 2019 to 2021 and has stayed that high ever since. It’s filling up faster than we can afford: Lake County will need to build a new, lined cell within the next 3–5 years to keep the landfill open.

💧 Food scraps also add moisture to the landfill, which creates leachate. That’s liquid that can carry toxic chemicals, heavy metals, and emerging pollutants like PFAS. Without a liner to catch it, leachate can reach our groundwater and local water supplies.

What you can do:

💚 Sign up for C4’s community food scraps compost program at the link in our bio! Every bucket of scraps you compost helps our landfill last longer and protects the water we all depend on.

Cloud City Conservation Center has been lucky to have Levi, a junior at Lake County High School, with us this summer as our Sustainability Intern. This new position is part of C4’s Growing Stewards high school internship program, which connects Lake County students with meaningful opportunities to learn, work, and make a difference in their community.

Thanks to generous support from the Leadville Race Series and Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation , Levi got a behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to make the race series as sustainable as possible. He jumped right in, helping educate racers and spectators about sorting their trash, compost, and recycling, making sure each item found its way into the right bin. Levi recently visited Elements Mountain Compost in Salida, CO, to follow the journey of the race series’ food scraps, seeing firsthand how they break down into nutrient-rich soil that is used by farms across Colorado.

Levi has a zest for life, a passion for bugs, and a laugh that’s impossible not to smile along with. We’re so thankful to have had him on the C4 team this summer and are excited to see where his curiosity takes him next!

Thank you so much to Leadville Race Series and Leadville Trail 100 Legacy Foundation for supporting C4 and helping create these incredible learning opportunities for Lake County youth 💚

100 miles. 10,152 feet. One reason: this place. 🏔️

Five of our biggest supporters are taking on the Leadville Race Series 100 Run for C4 in partnership with the Life Time Foundation in support of our shared vision: Healthy Planet, Healthy People. For every $1 we raise, Life Time foundation will donate $2 back to C4. Today we want you to meet three of our incredible runners💚

🏃 Beth — Running her first 100 she “can’t wait to tackle this massive challenge while I fundraise for an organization that helps maintain this wilderness I love so much.”

🏃 Ash — C4’s own Education Director, marking her 40th birthday by taking on her third Leadville 100.

🏃 Jeff — A founding C4 board member and former Lake County Commissioner who helped steward the county’s first climate action plan. He can see most of the course from his house, from Hope Pass to Turquoise Lake, and now he’s finally running it.

Together the team is hoping to raise $30,000 for the conservation, food, energy, and education work C4 is doing right here in Lake County. Every mile is for the land and the community behind this race.

Cheer them on, chip in, and follow along. 👉 Link in bio to donate.
