Every child deserves the opportunity to discover the joy of reading! At the Leavenworth County Health Department, we believe that building a love of reading early in life can help support a child’s learning, development, imagination, and future success.

That’s why we provide a free book shelf in our lobby where children and families can choose a book to take home and enjoy! Whether it’s a colorful picture book, a beginner chapter book, or a cozy bedtime story, we want to help make reading accessible, enjoyable, and fun for families throughout our community.

Access to books can encourage early literacy, strengthen family bonds through shared reading time, and help children build important language and communication skills. Sometimes, all it takes is one book to spark a lifelong love of learning!

Want to help us keep our shelves stocked?

If you or someone you know has gently used, child-friendly books that are no longer needed, we would love to give them a new home with a young reader! Donations of children’s books are welcome and help us continue this small but meaningful community initiative.

Where: Leavenworth County Health Department
When: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
What: Gently used, age-appropriate children’s books

Together, we can help put more stories into little hands, encourage young minds to grow, and make reading a little more accessible for families in Leavenworth County.

One book can open a world of possibilities! ❤️📚

Five months ago, the Leavenworth County Health Department’s Public Health Emergency Preparedness (PHEP) Coordinator launched an initiative to expand access to free Narcan (naloxone) throughout Leavenworth County. Today, we are proud to share the impact this effort has made in our community!

In just five months, we have distributed:
723 boxes of Narcan through community outreach events
2,375 boxes through Narcan distribution boxes located throughout the county
103 boxes through the Leavenworth County Health Department clinic

That is a total of 3,201 boxes of Narcan distributed in just five months!

These numbers represent more than supplies distributed. They represent increased access to a potentially lifesaving medication, greater community awareness, and more opportunities to prevent a tragedy.

Why does Narcan access matter?

Narcan, also known as naloxone, is a medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. Having it readily available can mean the difference between life and death, giving someone a second chance to receive medical care, treatment, and support.

We often compare having Narcan available to having a fire extinguisher. You hope you never have to use it, but you want it nearby when an emergency happens. The same principle applies to Narcan: having it available and knowing how to use it can save a life.

Opioid overdoses can happen in many circumstances, and an emergency may not always be obvious. A person may unknowingly encounter a substance containing fentanyl, someone may accidentally take too much opioid pain medication following surgery, or a child may gain access to medication that was not stored securely. These situations remind us why education, prevention, and access to lifesaving resources are so important.

You do not have to know someone who struggles with substance use to recognize the importance of carrying Narcan. An unexpected emergency can affect families, friends, coworkers, and members of our community.

At the Leavenworth County Health Department, we believe that every life matters. If making Narcan accessible helps save even one life and gives that person the opportunity to receive the help and treatment they need, then this work matters.

We are committed to continuing these efforts, expanding access, and working alongside our community partners to help prevent overdose deaths in Leavenworth County.

Free Narcan is available to our community. Carry it. Know how to use it. Help us save lives.

We want to extend our sincere gratitude to Glenda Holmes, The Mission and other parents and families for their incredibly generous donation of diapers, training pants, a bouncer, bassinet, clothing, books, shoes, and other essential items to the Health Department and WIC.

You may wonder why donations like these are so important or what we do with the items we receive. The answer is simple, they go directly to families in our community who need them.

Through programs such as PMI and TPTCM, we are able to provide assistance to mothers, fathers, and guardians with diapers, clothing, shoes, car seats, health and hygiene essentials, and so much more. If you’re not apart of the programs, no worry. Still give us a call.

Behind every item is a family. A parent who may be trying to make ends meet. A caregiver who simply needs a little extra help. A child who deserves to have the things they need to be safe, healthy, and comfortable.

And we want our community to know this, you do not have to go without. Help is available.

At the Health Department, we have an entire room dedicated to supplies, clothing, and necessities for children and families. Our goal is to make sure that when someone reaches out for help, we can do more than simply give them a phone number, we can help connect them with actual resources and tangible support.

Asking for help is not something to be ashamed of. Sometimes, families just need a helping hand, and that is exactly what we are here for.

This is what community looks like. It is neighbors helping neighbors, organizations stepping up, and people donating what they can so that someone else doesn’t have to go without.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributes to this effort. Your generosity truly makes a difference in the lives of families right here in our community.

If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, please reach out to the Leavenworth County Health Department at 913-250-2000. We are here to help, support, and connect you with available resources.
