At 36 letters and 14 syllables, it is one of the longest words in the English language. It combines hippopotamus, monster, the Latin root sesquipedalian (meaning "a foot and a half long"), and phobia (fear). It was coined for literary and comedic effect rather than a formal clinical diagnosis. The phrase “sesquipedalia verba” was used as long ago as the first century BCE by the Roman poet Horace, to criticize writers who used words “a foot and a half long.” It was American poet Aimee Nezheukumatathil, possibly afraid of their own last name, who coined the term how we know it in 2000. A shorter, more traditional term for the same concept is sesquipedalophobia. While the massive 36-letter word is a joke and not officially listed as a standalone diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), mental health professionals often evaluate it under the criteria for a specific phobia or a form of social anxiety disorder. A genuine fear or anxiety regarding reading, mispronouncing, or being judged over complex words.
