This week we celebrated the retirement of Detective Mark Teerink. Detective Teerink began his career with the Leawood Police Department in 2010 after working as an attorney for many years. Throughout his 16 years with the department, he served in a variety of roles including a patrol officer, training officer, warrant officer, and finally settling into the role of detective where he finished his career. As a detective, Teerink took on the world of cryptocurrency and financial crimes and really put himself and LWPD on the map in this area. During this time, Detective Teerink was able to successfully trace and return over 3 million dollars to victims - many of whom believed their life savings to be gone forever.

Thank you, Detective Teerink, for your service and commitment to the residents of Leawood and beyond, and best of luck in your next chapter!

Sometimes, our four-legged friends know exactly what to do.

Several nights ago, one of our officers was patrolling a residential neighborhood when he spotted a dog standing in the roadway. The officer noticed the dog was on a leash, but there was no owner in sight.

The officer followed the dog about half a block to its home, where he found the garage door open and the homeowner on the floor, unable to get up. The resident had been there for more than three hours.

Thanks to the resident’s loyal companion, our officer was able to find them and get them the help they needed. The resident was treated by medical personnel and is now recovering safely at home.

Please slow down and drive at a speed that gives you and everyone around you a chance to get home safely.

Yesterday we celebrated the retirement of Captain Kirt Yoder. Yoder has served the City of Leawood for more than 27 years, finishing up his career as the commander of the Administrative Services division. Although we are losing a great amount of experience as he retires, Captain Yoder will begin his new adventure as Chief Yoder with the Gladstone, MO Police Department just on the other side of the state line. We wish him well as he takes on this new role!

UPDATE - Car in pond related to 2016 Missing Persons Case

The vehicle recovered from a retention pond in the 14700 block of Norwood on Saturday, Sept. 12th, was confirmed to be the vehicle reported to be driven by Jay Flekier, who was reported missing by his family in June 2016.

Mr. Flekier was 59 when he was reported as missing from his south Leawood residence. An investigation was opened and no foul play was suspected in Mr. Flekier’s disappearance.

The Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed skeletal remains were located inside the vehicle following its recovery and are working to make an identification.

Our thoughts continue to be with Mr. Flekier’s family, who have asked for privacy.

This week we are celebrating an invaluable part of our team - our own Johnson County Mental Health Co-responders!

Co-responder Hennes and Co-responder Molina are trained clinicians who respond to behavioral health crises alongside our officers to help connect people with the care and resources they need.

Co-responders can help prevent unnecessary arrests, reduce emergency room visits, and decrease repeat calls for service. They also provide follow-up outreach to help individuals stay connected to support long after the initial call.

Today and every day, we are lucky to have them on our team and in our community!

Car Found in Neighborhood Retention Pond

A volunteer dive team found a car at the bottom of a retention pond in Leawood this morning.

Using a GIS satellite image, the team deployed sonar equipment to search the pond located in the 14700 block of Norwood. A diver descended to investigate a large metal object detected by sonar and discovered a car with a license plate that matched a vehicle connected to a missing person, raising hopes for closure in the investigation.

Leawood Police were notified just before noon of the team’s discovery. With help from the Overland Park Police Department’s dive team, a tow truck successfully removed the vehicle from the pond. LPD is working to notify the missing person’s family.
