WHAT WE DO WEDNESDAY πŸš¨πŸ“ž
The Voice Behind the Response

Our team consist of 12 dispatchers. We operate with two to three dispatchers on the first and second shifts, and two dispatchers on the third shift.

Our dispatchers undergo several weeks of training and receive a comprehensive manual covering CAD operations, radio channel management, standard phone lines, and 911 call handling. Multitasking is essential, as dispatchers routinely manage multiple 911 calls, phone lines, and radio communications simultaneously.

When calling 911, please provide your location first. If you are unsure of the exact address, state the road you are on, nearest cross streets, or prominent landmarks.

While it may feel like they are asking too many questions, emergency responders are dispatched immediately upon receiving your call. The detailed information gathered directly assists paramedics and AEMTs upon arrival.

Our outdoor warning sirens will be tested today at noon as part of our regularly scheduled test on the first Saturday of each month.

πŸ“’ This is only a test.
🌧️ If rain or storms are in the area, the test will be cancelled.

Remember: Outdoor warning sirens are designed to be heard when you are outdoors. If you hear them during an actual emergency, head indoors and check trusted weather sources for more information.

🚨 WHAT WE DO WEDNESDAY: HAZARDOUS MATERIALS RESPONSE TEAM

Our Hazardous Materials Response Team (HMRT) is trained and equipped to respond when hazardous materials threaten our community, whether the incident is accidental, deliberate or caused by a natural event.

Our team is made up of 36 members trained at the Technician or Specialist level. They train throughout the year on everything from decontamination and product control to sampling, detection and containment.

When they arrive, their priorities are simple:
πŸ”Ή Life Safety
πŸ”Ή Incident Stabilization
πŸ”Ή Property Conservation

HMRT also works closely with TEMA and other local, state and federal partners to continue building our training and response capabilities.

From specialized gas detection equipment to two dedicated response trailers and mass decontamination equipment, our team has the tools to help protect our people, property and environment.

This is another part of what we do to keep Wilson County prepared. πŸ§ͺπŸš’

NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH | WEEK 3

When severe weather hits, do you know where you'll go?

Don't wait until a warning is issued to figure out your safe place.

Take time now to:
πŸŒͺ️ Know the safest place in your home
πŸ“ Know where your nearest storm shelter is
πŸ“± Know how you will receive weather alerts
πŸš— Know alternate routes if you need to leave
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Make sure everyone in your household knows the plan

Preparedness means knowing what to do, where to go, and how to get there before an emergency happens.

Know your plan before you need it.

πŸš’ TRAINING, TRAINING & MORE TRAINING! πŸš‘

This past week, all three WEMA shifts completed mandatory department-wide training covering both fire/rescue and EMS skills.

πŸͺ’ Fire & Rescue:
On the fire and rescue side, crews trained on ropes, knots, and directional lifting techniques used in rope rescue operations, reinforcing the skills needed to safely and effectively operate in technical rescue environments.

πŸš‘ EMS:
On the EMS side, personnel completed biannual credentialing on an assortment of critical procedures. These high-risk, low-frequency skills require regular hands-on practice to ensure our providers remain proficient and prepared when they are needed.

Training all three shifts on the same skills keeps everyone on the same page and ready to work together. Because the goal isn't just to respond, it's to be ready to respond well.

Train. Practice. Learn. Repeat.
Stay ready, Wilson County. We are. πŸ’ͺπŸš’πŸš‘
