Today, there is perhaps nothing more fitting for us to share than this tribute.
2,977 lights illuminate the sky. One for each of the 2,977 lives taken on September 11, 2001.
For 25 years, there have been empty seats in rooms across our country.
Seats once filled by someoneβs parent or grandparent. A spouse. A sibling. A child. A friend. A coworker. A fellow firefighter or first responder. Each light represents a person with a life, a story, people who loved them, and a future that should have continued.
September 11 is often remembered in numbers. This tribute is a powerful reminder of the individuals behind them.
And the loss did not end that day.
In the 25 years since, first responders, recovery workers and others who served in the aftermath have suffered and lost their lives to illnesses connected to their service following the attacks. We remember them, too, along with those who survived and continue to carry the impact of that day.
Today, and every day, we honor those lives. We remember those individuals and the impact they left behind.
Twenty-five years later, we keep our promise.
We will never forget.
