When you spring forward, take a minute to check your smoke detectors. A quick test and fresh batteries can save lives. Working alarms give you the early warning you need to get out safely if a fire starts. It takes less than a minute, but it can make all the difference.

Before the early 1990s, Ashburn operated solely as a fire station. Thanks to the dedication and vision of five volunteers from Ashburn, Sterling, and Hamilton, the EMS program was established and began serving the community.

At the Annual AVFRD Awards Banquet on February 7, we recognized Assistant Chief Dawn Kilpatrick, Chief Melvin Byrne, Robin Davis, Jim Burke, and Randy Breton. Dawn is no longer with us, but was honored for her lasting impact. Melvin, Robin, and Jim were present, and Trudy attended to accept the award on behalf of her husband, Randy.
