**“Does ABA mean my child will sit at a table all day?”**

Not necessarily.

For young children, individualized learning opportunities can be incorporated into many different activities.

That might include playing with toys, art, movement, stories, snack routines, interactions with others, and other activities a child enjoys.

There may be times when structured activities are appropriate, but learning doesn't have to happen in only one place or look only one way.

At Intercept Health ABA, our Center-Based ABA program serves children ages 2–5 with individualized goals based on their needs.

Looking for ways to encourage positive play between young siblings?

Start with something simple and short.

Try rolling a ball back and forth, building a block tower together, taking turns with bubbles, singing a song, or completing an easy puzzle.

Activities like these can create natural opportunities to practice taking turns, waiting, communicating, and engaging with another person.

You don't need 30 minutes of perfect play.

A few successful minutes together can be a great starting point.

Have you ever asked a young child, “How was your day?” and received a one-word answer—or no answer at all?

Try asking about something more specific.

“What did you play with?”

“What did you have for snack?”

“What made you smile?”

“Did you play outside?”

Specific questions can make the conversation more concrete and give children a clearer idea of what you're asking.

And remember that children may respond in different ways—including speech, gestures, signs, pictures, or communication devices.

Try one of these questions on the ride home today!

Drop-off at preschool, childcare, or therapy can sometimes be difficult for young children.

A short and predictable goodbye routine may help make the transition easier to understand.

It could be as simple as a hug, a high-five, saying “I'll see you later,” and then saying goodbye.

Keeping the routine consistent gives children repeated opportunities to learn what happens during drop-off—and that their caregiver returns afterward.

It may take time and practice, and that's okay.

Fall can bring quite a few changes to a young child's routine—different schedules, school or preschool, cooler-weather clothing, and new activities.

For some children, even small changes can take time to get used to.

Parents can make new routines more predictable by using visual schedules, giving reminders before transitions, keeping language simple, and practicing the new routine consistently.

It doesn't have to click immediately. Learning a new routine is a skill, too.

At Intercept Health ABA, helping children participate in meaningful everyday routines can be part of their individualized goals.

To a child, building a block tower might simply be fun.

And that's important!

But the same activity can also create opportunities to practice communication, colors, taking turns, waiting, fine motor skills, following directions, and cleaning up.

For young children, learning opportunities can be incorporated into activities they already enjoy.

At Intercept Health ABA, play and individualized learning can go hand in hand.

Predictable routines can help young children better understand what is happening throughout their day.

Parents might use a simple picture schedule, consistent language, or a “First/Then” reminder to show what comes next.

For example:

“First shoes, then car.”

“First clean up, then snack.”

“First bath, then story.”

You don't need to schedule every minute of the day. The goal is simply to make some everyday transitions and expectations easier to understand.

A busy room, bright lights, unexpected sounds, or lots of activity may affect children differently.

That's why it's important to pay attention to what a child's behavior may be communicating about their environment.

Understanding what happens before and around a child's response can help caregivers and professionals identify ways to better support that individual child.

There isn't one environment or strategy that works for everyone. Individual needs matter.

What activity could your child do over and over again?

Those interests can be valuable opportunities for learning.

A favorite toy, game, song, or activity may create natural opportunities to practice communication, taking turns, following directions, interacting with others, or trying something new.

At Intercept Health ABA, understanding what motivates and interests each child can help make individualized learning more meaningful and engaging.
