Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day and honor the Native nations whose history and traditions are an essential part of Pennsylvania’s story.

Long before Pennsylvania became a commonwealth, Indigenous peoples, including the Lenni Lenape, Susquehannock, Haudenosaunee, Shawnee, and Nanticoke, called this land home. Their contributions, cultures, and enduring presence continue to shape our communities today.

Indigenous Peoples’ Day is an opportunity to acknowledge our shared history, learn from the past, and recognize the Indigenous communities who continue to contribute to Pennsylvania and our nation.

UPDATE: Big money has no place in our democracy, and this week, the House took a bipartisan step to end it.

My bill, HB 1327 passed out of the House State Government Committee with strong support from both sides of the aisle.

This legislation takes direct aim at money in politics by amending the Pennsylvania Election Code to outlaw cash giveaways, paid petition bounties, and deceptive lottery schemes designed to buy off voters. Our elections belong to everyday Pennsylvanians, not billionaire mega-donors using deep pockets to game the system and drown out working voices. Protecting the ballot box from financial manipulation isn't a partisan issue; it’s about defending the integrity of our commonwealth.

With committee approval secured, HB 1327 now moves to the full House floor. I'll keep working across the aisle to get big money out of our politics and ensure Pennsylvania's government remains truly of the people, by the people, and for the people.

I had the absolute joy of welcoming second-grade students from STEAM Academy to the Capitol this morning.

If you ever want an honest reminder of why public service matters, put a room full of energetic, curious 7- and 8-year-olds in the House chamber. Their eyes lit up taking in the history, and their enthusiasm was contagious. These kids prove that our future is sharp, creative, and in very good hands.

Huge thank-you to the teachers, chaperones, and the brilliant young thinkers of STEAM Academy for bringing so much spark to the People’s House today. Keep asking the big questions!

Opening your monthly utility bill shouldn’t cause anxiety. Earlier this week, I joined colleagues at the Capitol to push for action on my legislation (HB2264) establishing Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), which has already passed the House and is currently before the Senate.

Right now, running wildly expensive "peaker plants" during heatwaves and deep freezes creates a hidden "peaker tax" that inflates bills for every ratepayer. VPPs offer a smarter, voluntary solution that uses everyday tech families already own (like smart thermostats and EV chargers) to ease grid strain without costly infrastructure projects.

Participating households earn direct bill credits, while lower wholesale energy costs reduce baseline rates for everyone across Pennsylvania. The Senate needs to act on this common-sense bill and put real money back into family budgets where it belongs.

I’m thrilled to announce that $625,000 in state grant funding has been awarded to three incredible park projects across our community!

Funded through the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Community Conservation Partnerships Program, these investments will help protect our natural resources and enhance outdoor recreation for everyone to enjoy:

🏞️ $375,000 for Negley Park in Lemoyne
⚾ $150,000 for the City Island Master Site Plan
🚲 $100,000 for the Capital Area Greenbelt South Harrisburg Acquisition

The Capital Region is unique because our community is so closely connected to the natural world. From the mountains and rolling hills on the horizon to the green spaces along the Susquehanna, investing in our environment means directly improving our neighborhoods. These grants will help protect that natural beauty while ensuring the Capital Region remains a great place to live, work, and raise a family.

The Capital Region has always been a hub of big ideas, and Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is proof that our economic future depends on homegrown innovation and STEM talent.

I was proud to join Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) Secretary Rick Siger, Sen. Patty Kim, and university leadership and students to highlight what the new Innovate in PA 2.0 program means for Central Pennsylvania.

In this year’s bipartisan budget, we delivered $125 million to close the gap between brilliant research and real-world commercial success. For our region, this means:

🔬 Empowering Startups: Expanding venture capital, funding venture studios, and providing matching funds so our local entrepreneurs can compete and scale.

🧬 Leading in Life Sciences: Building dedicated clinical trial networks and career pathways that keep top biotech and healthcare talent right here in PA.

💼 Creating High-Paying Jobs: Supporting incubators like HU’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship to ensure the next generation of family-sustaining jobs takes root right in our backyard.

When we invest in our innovators, we invest in the future of our entire community.

Upcoming Earth Work along I-83 Corridor May Affect Traffic through the City of Harrisburg, Dauphin County

Weekday rolling roadblocks on I-83 will be implemented as a safety precaution.

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced today that rolling roadblocks are scheduled to begin on Interstate 83 in support of earth work related to the reconstruction of I-83 between Route 230 (Cameron Street) in the City of Harrisburg and 29th Street in Swatara Township, Dauphin County.

Starting Tuesday, October 27, the contractor will conduct earth work along northbound I-83. Rolling roadblocks will be performed on weekdays between noon and 2:00 PM for about six weeks. This work is weather dependent and will be conducted on an as-needed basis.

As a safety precaution, there will be traffic stoppages of up to 10 minutes on I-83 in both directions. Rolling roadblocks will begin on northbound I-83 at Route 581 and Exit 41B in Lemoyne, Cumberland County. Rolling stops on southbound I-83 will begin at the Paxton Street ramp to southbound I-83 at Exit 45.

Traffic on nearby streets will also be stopped during these operations. This will cause delays. Travelers should be alert and watch for stopped or slow-moving traffic.

There may be significant impacts to traffic during the life of this project, including traffic shifts, lane restrictions and road closures/detours. Advance notice will be issued prior to any major traffic impacts.

There are long-term construction signs along northbound I-83 from the I-83 John Harris Memorial (South) Bridge to the Eisenhower Interchange.

This work is part of the second of two contracts for East Shore Section 3 of the larger I-83 Capital Beltway Project.

This contract includes widening and reconstructing I-83 from two lanes to three lanes in each direction, constructing two mainline bridges, constructing a new overhead 13th Street bridge, constructing the 17th Street interchange and two new 17th Street bridges, acceleration and deceleration lanes, ramps, and improvements along the 17th Street, Paxton Street, and 13th Street corridors, and installing embankment benching, two retaining walls, one moment slab with toe wall, six overhead sign structures, guiderail, drainage, pollinator garden, highway lighting, pavement markings and other associated construction.

J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, is the contractor on this $132,727,725 project. All work on this contract is expected to be completed by October 18, 2033.

Today, the House voted to pass my legislation to bring real accountability and basic food safety standards to correctional facilities across Pennsylvania.

Facilities have a moral and constitutional duty to maintain safe living and working environments. When kitchens go without independent, expert inspections, it puts everyone in the facility at risk, including the dedicated correctional officers and staff who work demanding shifts and eat from those same dining halls.

By tasking the Department of Agriculture with conducting independent food safety inspections and publishing the findings publicly, this bill delivers the transparency, dignity, and workplace protections Pennsylvanians expect and deserve.

Next stop: the Senate.
