Today we’re celebrating K-9 Bruno as he turns 5 years old! Bruno is a dedicated dual-purpose German Shepherd, trained in both patrol and narcotics, and he brings unmatched drive, loyalty, and heart to the job every single day.

From tracking suspects to keeping his handler safe, Bruno represents the very best of teamwork, courage, and service. We’re proud to have him on the team and grateful for everything he does to protect our community.

City Manager Beccy Yocham has announced the appointment of Deputy Chief Eric Schmitz to serve as the new chief of police for the City of Lenexa.

Schmitz brings 27 years of service with the Lenexa Police Department to his role as chief of police, where he will lead a team of nearly 150 sworn and civilian personnel and serve as a member of the City of Lenexa’s executive leadership team.

Schmitz is the fifth individual to serve as Lenexa’s police chief, succeeding Chief Dawn Layman, who retired from Lenexa following a distinguished 32-year career in law enforcement.

“Eric Schmitz is a highly respected law enforcement professional whose experience and values align closely with our city’s commitment to public safety and community trust,” City Manager Beccy Yocham said. “I am proud to have him step into this important leadership role and confident he is the right person to lead our police department into its next chapter.”

Today, we honor Chief Dawn Layman as she retires after 32 years of dedicated service to the Lenexa Police Department.

Chief Layman has been a steadfast leader, a mentor to many, and a champion for professionalism, innovation, and community trust. She continually pushed our department to strive for exceptional service, a standard she lived out every day and inspired others to uphold.

Throughout her career, she guided our organization with integrity and compassion, always putting the safety and well-being of our community and our employees first. Her impact on Lenexa, and on all who had the privilege of serving alongside her, cannot be measured.

Please join us in congratulating Chief Layman on her well-earned retirement. We wish her all the best in this next chapter.
