A Message from the Valmead Fire Chief

To our Valmead neighbors,
First and foremost, we sincerely apologize for the unexpected activation of the fire siren. We understand how loud and frightening it can be, especially when it has not been used for several years. The last thing we ever want to do is terrify or disturb our neighbors.
Electrical upgrades have been taking place at the fire department, and unfortunately, we were unaware that the siren had begun activating again until we received two complaints. We immediately began looking into the issue and have spoken with an electrician who is assisting us in getting the problem corrected.
Unfortunately, the electrician will not be able to return until Friday, so we ask for your patience and understanding until then. We are doing everything we can to ensure the siren does not activate unnecessarily.
Please know that we hear you, we understand your concerns, and we are taking this seriously. We will work to have this issue resolved as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your patience and for being great neighbors.

Sincerely,
Valmead Fire & Rescue

Monday nights at Valmead Fire Rescue aren’t just about checking trucks- they’re about sharpening skills that matter when our community needs us most.

Tonight’s training focused on Rural Water Supply, working with Tanker 454 supplying a drop tank connected to Engine 453 in a sustained water shuttle operation. These drills help prepare our drivers, pump operators, and firefighters for real-world situations where hydrants simply aren’t available.

But training doesn’t stop at the basics. Firefighting is often about adapting when things don’t go as planned. Crews also worked through troubleshooting scenarios and learned practical field techniques; including how to use the Venturi effect within the pump to help prime a line when a truck primer fails. Knowledge, experience, and problem-solving keep water flowing and crews operating safely.

Every Monday night is another opportunity to learn, train, and build a stronger department together.

If you’ve ever wanted to be part of something bigger than yourself… to serve your community, gain valuable skills, and stand beside a great group of people - come see us on a Monday night. We’re always looking for good people willing to learn and serve.

Nineteen years. That’s how long it’s been since Valmead Fire placed a brand-new fire protection apparatus in frontline service.

Today, that changed.

After three years of planning, design meetings, funding coordination, and build time, our newest apparatus passed final inspection at Alexis Fire Equipment and is officially ready to serve the Valmead community.

Built on a Freightliner FL114 SD chassis, this truck was designed with rural fire protection in mind. It carries 2,000 gallons of water, is equipped with a 1,500 GPM pump, and features electric water dumps on the rear, driver, and officer sides. It can deliver 2,000 gallons of water in just 61 seconds. When water supply is critical, that speed matters.

Until now, our newest frontline truck was a 2007 model. This apparatus represents more than new equipment. It is a major investment in firefighter safety, operational capability, and the protection of the citizens we serve.

This project was made possible in partnership with Blue Ridge Energy through the REDLG grant program. We are grateful for their support and shared commitment to strengthening rural emergency services.

Thank you to Chief Potter, Deputy Chief Foust, Asst. Chief McElyea, and Captain Tester for traveling to complete the final inspection and helping bring this project across the finish line.

We are proud to bring this truck home. Stay tuned for arrival details. 🚒
