Heating Season Is Here—Let’s Keep Our Community Safe!
As cooler weather moves in, many of us will soon be turning on the heat, building a fire in the fireplace, or firing up the wood stove. Everyone at Kings Creek Fire Department wants to remind you to take a little time now to help protect your home and the people you love.
Start by checking your smoke alarms! Install fresh batteries in alarms with replaceable batteries, and test every alarm to make sure it works. If your alarms have sealed batteries, follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Remember to test your alarms every month—not just when the seasons change. Make sure you have smoke alarms inside every bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of your home.
Before using your fireplace or wood stove, have your chimney inspected and cleaned as needed. Buildup inside a chimney can create a serious fire hazard. Have heating equipment checked and serviced, and keep furniture, blankets, curtains, decorations, and other items that can burn safely away from heat sources.
If you use a portable space heater, place it on a solid, flat surface and keep it at least three feet away from anything that can burn. Plug it directly into a wall outlet, and turn it off before leaving the room or going to bed.
Don’t forget your carbon monoxide alarms. Fuel-burning heating equipment can produce carbon monoxide, a dangerous gas you cannot see or smell. Check your alarms and make sure they are working properly.
Take a few minutes to talk with everyone in your household about what to do if an alarm sounds. Know your ways out, choose a meeting place outside, and remind children never to go back inside a burning home.
Our community means a great deal to us, and we want every family to enjoy a warm and safe season. Please share this reminder with your friends, family, and neighbors.
From everyone at Kings Creek Fire Department: stay warm, look out for one another, and check those smoke alarms. Working smoke alarms save lives!
