Go ahead and have a piece of cake today. It’s our birthday!

Happy 209th birthday, Lawrence County!

On this day in 1817, the General Assembly of Tennessee voted to create Lawrence County from lands newly acquired from the Chickasaw Indians, and from portions of surrounding counties.

A wild and rugged place, it would be almost sixty years before the County was home to more than 10,000 souls. In fact, every man, woman, and child who lived in Lawrence County’s 600 square miles in 1820 would fit in Lawrence County High School’s Ralph Benson Memorial Gymnasium today.
