Why take the Brandywine tour at the Hagley Museum?
Taking the Brandywine Tour at the Hagley Museum and Library is the best way to understand the roots of American industry and the du Pont family's global legacy. This 235-acre indoor-outdoor experience provides deep, contextual insight into the birth of the DuPont company.
Key highlights include:
The Original Black Powder Yards: See where E.I. du Pont first started manufacturing gunpowder in 1802. You'll watch live demonstrations of a working 19th-century machine shop, massive eight-ton roll mills, and functional water turbines powered by the Brandywine River.
Eleutherian Mills: Explore the very first du Pont family home in America. This Georgian-style residence sits at the center of both business and family life and features treasured family heirlooms and American folk art.
The E.I. du Pont Garden: Walk through the restored French-style heirloom garden originally planned by E.I. du Pont in 1804.
Workers' Hill: Gain a fascinating look at the immigrant workers' community, complete with a restored one-room schoolhouse and the living gardens that sustained the workforce.
