GVCF manages a regional application available to students in public, private, and remote schools in the Greenbrier Valley and nearby communities.

The application includes many scholarship awards outside of our portfolio, but we are happy to do the legwork to make as much money available to our students as possible.

In 2026, a total of $289K in scholarships were awarded through our application, $179K of which from funds we manage.

We’re thrilled to be in Asheville at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond’s Investing in Rural America annual convening.

It’s a joy to connect with great minds who understand the value of empowering rural America.

Added bonus: showing off one of the most special places in Appalachia.

We happily join the Shepherds Center of Greenbrier Valley in honoring Warren & Margaret May as the recipients of their 2026 Community Service Award.

The Greenbrier Valley is better and brighter because of them.

In Appalachia, we naturally find ways to work together. It’s one of the greatest attributes of life in rural communities like ours.

This initiative is a great example of how we can maximize funding in small communities to increase impact and reach.

We support local youth in agriculture through the Greenbrier Monroe Youth Livestock Association’s annual auction, hosted at the State Fair of West Virginia. We purchase a few pigs that are then processed locally into sausage that is delivered to Monroe County Coalition for Children & Families, Inc., who then works with Monroe County’s food pantries to distribute. We added the Ronceverte Food Pantry to our distribution list, thanks to funding from a private donor who matched our initiative.

This project helps us support hardworking youth, our partner organizations in agriculture and tourism, and food security and access programs across our region, made possible by funding from the Community Foundation and a private donor and friend of the organization.

We take a little money and stretch it across multiple areas of need through strategic partnerships and collaborative funding— this is a community foundation’s way.

This is no ordinary ice cream cone! This ice cream provides scholarships to local high school students and helps to fund trips to national competitions for HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America-Future Health Professionals). Our ice cream helped the local Little League team travel to the state tournament and provided gift cards to our airport TSA workers who had their paychecks delayed. This ice cream made it possible to donate money for a local park and elementary school to update their playground equipment. Over the last several years, this ice cream cone paid to have 9 fire hydrants installed in our local community so homeowners could save money on the cost of insurance but most importantly save a life in the event of a house fire.

How is it possible that this cone can do all that and more? Because we’re all volunteers who give up our time to contribute to the success of our ice cream stand so that our proceeds can stay in our community. We have the best customers who continue to support our efforts, even though we are not professionals.

We strive to make our community a better place one scoop at a time😊

We’ve been exactly where our neighbors in Lewis and Upshur counties are after the recent floods that unfortunately have become too common in Central Appalachia.

One thing we love most about this state is the natural instinct to help each other. We formed a disaster relief fund after our flooding ten years ago and the GVCF Board quickly recognized our duty to extend the generosity we received ourselves.

It is our privilege to send a grant to the Tygart Valley United Way for the Lewis Upshur Flood Assistance Fund. We are here to help however we can and if you’re in the position to do the same, we all know well how much it is appreciated.
