Our feature for Hispanic Heritage Month today is Dr.Isabel Pérez Farfante, a Cuban-born zoologist. Farfante obtained her master’s degree in 1944 and doctorate in 1948 from Radcliffe College at Harvard University, becoming the first Cuban woman to receive her Ph.D. from an Ivy League school. She became one of the world's foremost zoologists studying prawns. After recieving her doctorate, she was working as a professor and biologist in her homeland of Cuba when she and her husband learned they had been “blacklisted” by Fidel Castro's government. Fearing for their safety, the family fled to the United States. There she joined the National Marine Fisheries Service as a systematic zoologist at its laboratory in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. She was appointed carcinologist emeritus with the Service in 1986, and, one year later, she earned a role as a research associate in the Museum’s division of crustacea, where she remained until her retirement.

Our Hipanic Heritage Month celebration continues today with a feature on Sylvia Mendez. She is an American civil rights activist and nurse who was at the center of the court case Mendez v. Westminster, in which a federal court ruled in the mid-1940s that the school segregation of Hispanic children was unconstitutional. Mendez v. Westminster paved the way for the landmark 1954 Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education.Thurgood Marshall, who represented the plaintiffs, used the equal protection argument that was argued in Mendez v. Westminster to successfully argue that all racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. Sylvia Mendez went on to become a nurse, and in 2011 President Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her civil rights work.
