Lexington Big Give: Fire Stations Are Collection Points!

This holiday season, Lexington Fire Department stations are proud to serve as collection points for the Lexington Big Give in partnership with the City of Lexington and God’s Pantry Food Bank. This year’s food drive will run from October 15th – November 30th.

Drop off unopened, non-perishable food items at any Lexington Fire Station and help ensure no one in our community goes hungry. Every donation makes a difference!

Cutting a flat roof can be challenging, and finding real world opportunities to practice the skill can be even harder.
Recently, crews from 1st Platoon District 5 had the opportunity to train on a flat roof, allowing firefighters to sharpen their ventilation techniques in a realistic setting. Hands-on training like this builds confidence and ensures crews are prepared when they need these skills on the fireground.
We appreciate the opportunity to train in realistic conditions and our members' commitment to continually improving their craft.

Today we remember and honor Lieutenant Estill B. Rickerson, who died on this day in 1971. As Engine 9 was backing into the station, Lt. Estill collapsed and died, despite the efforts of his fellow firefighters. He was 40 years old.

Confined space rescues present a unique set of challenges. Before a rescue can even begin, crews must evaluate the environment, monitor the air for hazardous conditions, and develop a plan to keep both the rescuer and the victim safe.
This rescue, a couple of weeks ago, allowed our Special Operations teams to use their specialized skills and training for a trapped individual. These low-frequency/high-risk events require extensive preparation, teamwork, and attention to detail to ensure a safe and successful outcome for everyone.

Last week, Lexington Fire Department crews rescued two kittens from a small construction area.
Three kittens had been rescued the day before, but neighbors reported they could still hear meowing coming from the area. LFD crews were able to locate the remaining two kittens and safely rescue them.
The best part? All five kittens were reunited and are now together with the same caretaker.
Not every rescue involves lights and sirens, but this one definitely gave us a reason to smile.
