Architecture_uky The College of Design School of Architecture at the University of Kentucky offers both UG and Grad Degrees and is the only accredited program in the state.

The College of Design School of Architecture at the University of Kentucky offers a four-year undergraduate program – the only accredited architecture program in Kentucky – leading to a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture. This degree combines a broad liberal arts education with a foundation in the theory and practice of architecture. With a rich history of industry-renowned faculty and alumni designing internationally, the School of Architecture prepares students for a myriad of professional opportunities. Studios provide a social and curricular framework for the architecture student. Representational skills such as drawing, model making and computer modeling are practiced rigorously as essential skills for design. In addition to the design studio, students study building technology; materials and structural systems; digital fabrication techniques; the history, theory and criticism of architecture; and the ethical and professional principles of a successful architecture practice.

Sketching, Observing + Experiencing Architecture!

Our first-year UKCoD School of Architecture students are putting pencil to paper at Newfields in Indianapolis!

Taking time to slow down, observe, and document the spaces around them, students are exploring architecture through sketching—studying light, material, pattern, and spatial relationships firsthand.

Learning beyond the studio is what Travel Week is all about!

Bus 2: First Stop, Indianapolis!

While one group of UKCoD School of Architecture first-year architecture students explores Columbus, Indiana, our second bus kicked off Travel Week in Indianapolis!

Two buses, two different itineraries, and plenty of architectural discoveries along the way! Splitting into smaller groups gives our students more opportunities to explore, observe, and experience architecture beyond the studio.

Both groups will reunite in Indianapolis this evening as our first-year Travel Week adventures continue!

First stop: Columbus, Indiana!

UKCoD School of Architecture Travel Week is underway! Our 80+ first-year architecture students are traveling in two buses, splitting into smaller groups for today’s architectural explorations.

One group is discovering the remarkable architecture of Columbus, Indiana, while the other follows a different itinerary. Splitting up allows students to experience architectural tours and exhibitions in smaller groups without overwhelming our hosts.

Both groups will reunite this evening in Indianapolis for the next chapter of their architectural adventure!

Follow along throughout the week as we share our students’ discoveries and experiences beyond the studio!

🎉 Congratulations to our 2026 Lyman T. Johnson Award Recipients!

Today, we celebrate Thomas Hickey ’93, [ Thomas Hickey / GRADE New York ] recipient of the Torch of Excellence Award, and Maria Catalan [ Maria Catalán ], recipient of the Torch Bearer Award, both representing the University of Kentucky College of Design’s School of Architecture [ UKCoD School of Architecture ].

Our honorees were recognized at the 35th Annual Lyman T. Johnson Awards Luncheon, held on October 9, 2026, and are pictured here with College of Design Dean Ned Crankshaw.

The Lyman T. Johnson Awards celebrate outstanding alumni and students who exemplify leadership, achievement, and a commitment to excellence while honoring the remarkable legacy of Lyman T. Johnson.

Congratulations to Associate Professor Mark O’Bryan!

For more than a decade, Associate UKCoD School of Architecture Professor Mark O’Bryan has helped College of Design students experience architecture where it was created. Through faculty-directed education abroad programs in Italy and beyond, O’Bryan has taken nearly 150 students overseas to explore architecture, art and culture firsthand. 🏛️🌎

Congratulations to O’Bryan, recipient of UK International Center’s Global Impact Award for Distinguished Faculty Achievements in Education Abroad. His dedication to global learning continues to expand students’ understanding of design, culture and the built environment. 🏆
