After almost 8️⃣ weeks — I FINALLY got back to running tonight — 2.5 miles around theUniversity of South Carolinaa campus!

Perfect night for it, too! Even though my pace was pretty slow… 😳 Only up from here and getting back into the swing of training! I have missed it.

Hope y’all are having a great week, y’all!

Y’all know I don’t mince words, so listen to this… 😅

Apparently, a week off Facebook and a missed phone call can get you inducted into the “good old boys’ club.” That’s what a recent email suggested, anyway.

The funny/sad part: I was trying to get well, not well-connected. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Multiple doctor visits, multiple tests, lots of IV fluids, and mostly sleeping. If there were any “backroom deals,” somebody forgot to invite me. I was in my bedroom sleeping. But please let me know about them, cause y’all know I’d happily call them out!

Anyways, here’s what got me thinking: we want everyday people in public office, right? Those people don’t stop being human on Election Day.

We have jobs. Families. We get sick, lose people we love, and sometimes we’re just plain tired. We have to take care of ourselves, too.

Otherwise, there won’t be a Gavin to represent you—and ask too many questions at Council meetings, as some would say. 😂

Should you expect a returned call, honest answers, and follow-through? Absolutely. Could I do better sometimes? Of course. And I’ll keep working at it.

I love Lexington, and I take this job seriously. But a quiet page isn’t a measure of how much I care.

Sometimes I’m just sick. Tired. Busy at work. Spending time with family. And yes, believe it or not, sometimes I’m just out of clever ideas to post (even though I apparently have enough for all of Council 😇) on social media…

So y’all…Keep calling. Keep asking questions. Keep holding me accountable. I signed up for all of that.

But before we jump from a missed call to a conspiracy theory next time, a little grace and a “Hey, Gavin, you doing alright?” is always an option. Just saying… 🤷🏼‍♂️

I can’t believe it’s already been six months, Mammaw… 💜😢

Half a year. Nearly 200 days of life continuing to go on without you here…

So many moments I’ve wanted to tell you about, so many times I’ve wished I could pick up the phone and call you, and so many little things that bring you to mind when I least expect it.

The thing people don’t tell you about grief is how the world keeps moving.

How the milestones still come. The seasons change. Life stays busy. There’s work, family, laughter, plans, and all the ordinary things that keep pulling you forward, even when part of you would give anything to go back.

Some days, it feels like you’ve been gone forever. Other days, I still can’t quite believe you’re gone at all — like I can still pick up the phone and call one of the few numbers I actually know by heart.

I think that’s one of the hardest parts of losing someone you love so much — I know it has been for me over these last six months.

Life keeps moving forward, but a part of you is always looking back — remembering the conversations, the little things, and wishing for just one more ordinary day together sitting on the back porch and drinking coffee.

Six months later, Mammaw, I still miss you more than I know how to put into words — and I imagine no amount of time will ever change that. 💜

Even at a University with 40,000+ students, it is possible to build a community — and my Marketing Scholars class is proof of that.

I had these ladies last year, and now they’re alums of the Marketing Scholars program at the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina.

Some of them are in law school, others are working their first marketing jobs — and a few are finishing their last semester. But no matter where they are on their journeys, I still make a point to keep in touch with each them (and the others not pictured here).

The class may have ended, but the relationships haven’t. That’s part of what makes the Moore School special, and I’m proud to play a small part in it.

Someone had to shed light on the issue of streetlights in the Town of Lexington, SC… 🤷🏼‍♂️💡

Enjoyed speaking with WLTX News19 about the ongoing streetlight debate, and why sending you the bill isn’t my idea of a bright solution, and certainly won’t get my vote!

Story will air tonight! Be sure to tune in and share your thoughts with me!

🗣️ MUST READ: I did not get elected to Town of Lexington, SC Town Council to sit back, shy away from asking questions, and just to go along to get along. I’m not here “to make friends,” and I certainly don’t care if I “ruffle feathers.”

Quite frankly, I see it this way: I was elected to be a voice for you. To stand up for you. To ask questions. To challenge the status quo. And yes, to speak up when I see an inequity — and then fight like hell to ensure we make it right.

I came across this issue of street lights a year ago. Yes, A YEAR AGO! It’s taken A YEAR to make it to Council.

And now, instead of doing all we can to make it right—you know, for all the people in Town who are literally paying for street lights twice—a new idea has been proposed: to stop paying for them altogether and instead, put them on your monthly energy bill.

Proponents of that proposal call it fiscal conservatism. I call it shifting the burden. Passing the buck.

So to be clear: absolutely not! There’s no way I’m voting to send you the bill for street lights in our Town.

The last thing Lexington families need right now is yet ANOTHER MONTHLY BILL, and I’m going to fight tooth and nail to ensure that doesn’t happen. Even if that means standing on my own and being the sole vote in opposition. Because that’s what you elected me to do.

😪 Six months today, my Mammaw — the kindest, most loving, most resilient person I’ve ever known — had a stroke.

We didn’t know on that day how serious it was, nor how much our lives were going to change; but I’m so grateful I got to hold your hand for the next week, tell you how much I love(d) you, and thank you for all you did for me, and for all your family.

Tonight me and Matthew, Brooke, and Paige, came to sit with you (we even saw a shooting star). We laughed. Teared up. Told funny stories. Talked about the last six months and the next six ahead. And we started to think about how different the holiday season ahead is going to look… 😔

I think about you everyday, but especially today, and over this next week, you will be on my mind even more. I miss you so much, I wish I had more time with you, and I pray you never doubted just how much I love(d) you.

I hope you’ve found the peace we all know one can only find in Heaven. I hope you’re reunited with your son, my uncle, Darrell — and your mom, dad, and so many others you loved. And I hope you’re looking down on us, proud of how your absence has brought all your grandkids even closer — knowing one day we’ll all be together again.

I love you, Mammaw, and I miss you so much. 💜

⚾️ Matthew and I headed up to Spartanburg last night to watch our nephew, TJ, play a little Fall Ball!

A cool fall evening, a little baseball, and some family time — a pretty great way to spend a Friday night. ❤️

Hope y’all are enjoying the weekend so far! Happy Saturday and here’s to some fun football games to watch this weekend! 🏈

📍 ALRIGHT Y’ALL! Earlier this week, members of Town of Lexington, SC Town Council were asked to submit a document outlining our priorities for the Town’s Vision Plan.

In the interest of transparency, I’m sharing mine because I believe you ought to know where my priorities lie.

To be clear, this is not an all-inclusive list of everything I believe we should accomplish. It is a starting point—and I believe we have a lot of work to do over the next few years.

My priorities center around four major pillars:

📈 Planning for Growth
⚙️ Operational Excellence
🤝 Supporting Our Staff
🏡 Preserving What Makes Lexington, Lexington

That means planning ahead for our infrastructure, transportation and facilities; making Town government more efficient and transparent; investing in the people who serve our citizens; and protecting the small-town character, history and locally owned businesses that make Lexington special.

These are my priorities, but Lexington’s vision cannot belong to any one Councilmember. It should reflect the priorities of the people who live here, pay Town taxes, and will be most directly affected by the decisions we make.

What do you believe Lexington needs to accomplish over the next ten years? Hopefully you filled out the Town's service recently – but I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
