Hood News Peeps traveling on East Freeway in the Chambers County near Anahuac/Hankamer, TX area are reporting a light foggy/hazey view.

HEAVY SMOKE & LIMITED VISIBILITY

Heavy smoke from a lightning-caused marsh fire near High Island is being pushed into the Hankamer area due to shifting winds.

Visibility is extremely limited in some areas, and eastbound traffic on I-10 is slowing through Hankamer toward Winnie.

Motorists should SLOW DOWN, turn on headlights, increase following distance, and be prepared for sudden changes in visibility.

The smoke is coming from the High Island marsh fire.

On 4/30/26 at approximately 2:36pm the Hardin ISD PCT 3 SRO was notified of a suspicious person near the 6th Grade building. Reports from a student to a coach stated there was someone dressed in all black, outside of the fence near the Junior High gym watching the students. Coaches immediately notified the SRO while checking the area. The Pct 3 SRO notified the LCSO SRO to ask if he could make an extra patrol around CR 2003 and the school, while cameras were being reviewed and the campus was checked. The PCT 3 SRO also requested an extra deputy from the LCSO to sit at the High School during this time, so each campus would have an officer present. During this time it was discovered that the reported suspicious person was actually a college recruiter waiting to meet with an athlete, and had already been escorted on campus by a coach. At no point was a lock down initiated or an active threat present.

The Junior High and 6th Grade building were on a temporary hold status to reduce movement during the investigation. The hold was released at approximately 3:04pm and the students resumed normal activities.
