CASEY COUNTY — LET’S SHAKEOUT!

Thursday, October 15, 2026 | 10:15 AM

Casey County Emergency Management, along with the Casey County School System, will be participating in the 2026 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut, an annual earthquake preparedness drill.

We would like to encourage all households, businesses, daycare centers, healthcare facilities, and other organizations throughout Casey County to join us in participating!

Earthquakes can occur with little or no warning, and knowing how to respond can help prevent injuries and save lives. Although earthquakes may not be something we think about every day, preparedness is important for everyone.

At 10:15 AM on Thursday, October 15, take a few minutes to practice three important safety actions:

DROP — Get down on your hands and knees.

COVER — Protect your head and neck under a sturdy desk or table if possible.

HOLD ON — Stay in position until the shaking stops.

This is also a great opportunity for families to discuss earthquake safety at home. Talk with your children about what to do if an earthquake occurs, identify safe places in each room, and discuss how your family would communicate and reconnect following an emergency.

This simple drill can be conducted at home, in the workplace, at daycare centers, or in healthcare facilities. The exercise can be adapted to different environments and individual abilities.

We encourage everyone throughout Casey County to take part. Whether you’re at home, school, or work, taking a few minutes to practice can make a difference.

Preparedness starts with knowing what to do. A few minutes of practice today can make a difference when an emergency occurs.

CASEY COUNTY WATER SITUATION UPDATE

Casey County remains in a serious water shortage, and continued water conservation is extremely important.

Current Water Conditions:

* Lake Liberty is 17.8 feet below full pool.
* Approximately 390,000 gallons per day are being pumped from the Green River.
* Approximately 1.2 to 1.3 million gallons per day are being drawn from Lake Liberty for the water treatment plant.

While rainfall is expected across the area this weekend, the anticipated amounts are minimal compared to what is needed to see significant recovery in Lake Liberty. Any rainfall is certainly welcome, but this situation will require much more than one weekend of rain.

Water conservation remains critical.

Please continue to be mindful of your water usage and eliminate unnecessary consumption whenever possible.

It’s easy to become discouraged when others may not be taking conservation seriously. However, regardless of what others choose to do, your efforts still matter. Every gallon saved makes a difference.

Recovery will take time, significant rainfall, and a continued community-wide commitment to conserving water.

Thank you to everyone who continues to do their part.

TIER II CHEMICAL REPORTING — INFORMATION FOR CASEY COUNTY BUSINESSES & FACILITIES

It’s time for Casey County businesses and facilities to begin thinking about the upcoming Tier II reporting season. The annual filing period runs January 1 through March 1, so now is a good time to determine whether your facility may have a reporting requirement and to become familiar with the filing process.

Tier II reporting is required under federal law through the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA / SARA Title III). In Kentucky, the program is administered through the Kentucky Emergency Response Commission (KERC).

While this is a federal reporting requirement, the information directly benefits Casey County. Tier II information helps local emergency planners, fire departments, and other first responders know what hazardous chemicals may be present at facilities within our community. Having this information available helps improve emergency planning and gives responders better information before arriving at a chemical-related incident.

The Casey County Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) is sharing this information to help local businesses and facilities become familiar with the requirements, determine whether they may need to report, and know where to go for assistance.

File your Tier II report online through the Kentucky Hazconnect® System:
https://kentucky.hazconnect.com/Account/Login.aspx

Annual filing period: January 1 – March 1.

Facilities can also use the EPA Consolidated List of Lists as a reference to help identify chemicals that may be subject to certain reporting requirements:

If you have questions about Tier II reporting, the filing process, or whether your facility may be required to report, please contact the Kentucky Tier II Program:

When someone goes missing, quick and accurate information can make a big difference.

Before attending a crowded event, take a current photo of your child so you have a picture showing exactly what they are wearing. Make sure children know what to do if they become separated and, when appropriate, know a parent or guardian’s phone number.

If a child, vulnerable adult, or anyone who may be in danger is missing, call 911 immediately or notify the nearest uniformed officer, first responder, security officer, or event staff member.

Be ready to provide:
• A recent photo
• Name and age
• Clothing description
• Where and when they were last seen
• Who they were with
• Medical or special needs
• Your contact number

You do not have to wait 24 hours to report a missing person.

Getting information to first responders quickly helps us begin the search faster.

And PLEASE, if you call and give an address of the missing person incident, please stay there or designate someone to stay to meet with first responders. We cannot search without information.

Have you heard of mPING?

mPING is a free weather-reporting app that allows YOU to report the weather conditions you are actually seeing at your location.

Reports can include things such as rain, snow, ice, hail, flooding, wind damage, reduced visibility, and other weather conditions.

Our local National Weather Service office in Louisville (LMK) monitors mPING reports, making accurate reports from the public another useful source of real-time information during changing weather conditions.

The important thing is to use mPING responsibly. Only report conditions you personally observe, and make sure your report accurately reflects what is happening at your location.

You can find the mPING app in the Apple App Store or Google Play Store.

The more accurate ground-level information available during a weather event, the better the overall picture of what is happening across Casey County and the surrounding area.

See it. Report it. Help provide the ground truth.
