--Kaua'i police share Halloween safety tips--

LĪHU‘E – On Friday, Oct. 23, the Kaua’i Police Department (KPD) hosted a memorable Halloween-themed movie night at its Līhuʻe headquarters featuring “Minions & Monsters” under the stars. This free event was open to the public and had an estimated 300 attendees.

"KPD’s inaugural Halloween movie night event was designed to give the community a safe place to enjoy a family-friendly evening at the KPD Headquarters,” said Kaua’i Chief of Police Rudy Tai. “We worked with partner agencies to create a festive night of enjoyment during a time when many of our residents are facing hardships.”

Keiki were invited to trick-or-treat around the campus offices, view a Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck (BearCat) on display, jump in a bouncy house, and take a free pumpkin from a pumpkin patch. Life-size Minions made a surprise visit to the crowd. Complimentary food and movie-theater style popcorn added to the ambience.

Participating agencies set up tables offering information on jobs and social services, making this a well-rounded event where struggling families could learn about free resources.

KPD would like to thank all partner agencies who made their inaugural movie night event a success:

• Employee Council, County of Kaua’i
• State of Hawai’i Organization of Police Officers (SHOPO)
• Office of the Prosecuting Attorney, County of Kaua’i
• Kaua’i Emergency Management Agency, County of Kaua’i
• Kaua’i Fire Department
• American Medical Response
• Hale `Ōpio
• Child & Family Service Kaua’i
• YWCA of Kaua’i
• Friends and Family of Agriculture
• Fun and Kwazy
• Vylor Inc.

With Halloween less than a week away, the Kaua’i Police Department (KPD) offers the following safety tips:

✅Trick-or-treat in well-lit areas in a familiar neighborhood.
✅Keep a flashlight or glow stick handy.
✅Children should always be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating.
✅Children should know their address, phone number, and how to dial 911 in an emergency. Young children should have this information attached to their costume in case they get separated or lost.
✅Inspect all candy before eating. Dispose of any candy not in its original packaging or showing signs of tampering. When in doubt, throw it out!
✅Don’t hesitate to report suspicious activity to police.

“Halloween is a wonderful time for kids and kids-at-heart to enjoy dressing up in costumes and trick-or-treating in their neighborhoods,” stated Tai. “Even though we feel safe in our small island community, parents and guardians should be vigilant and never let their guard down. This will help to ensure a safe and enjoyable Halloween for everyone.”

The Kaua‘i Police Department (KPD) is introducing Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) technology as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, strengthen investigative capabilities, and improve the department's ability to respond to criminal activity throughout the island.

The implementation of this technology is intended to enhance existing investigative methods, allowing officers to identify vehicles of interest and develop investigative leads more efficiently. ALPR technology does not replace traditional police work but rather serves as an additional resource to support investigations and public safety operations. Additionally, KPD’s ALPR technology should not be confused with the Flock Safety camera ALPR technology, which is a private company that stores data on its own servers. Flock camera data is accessible to anyone with a subscription, whereas data collected by KPD’s ALPR cameras is only accessible within KPD.

Today, we stood together in purple to recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month and YWCA Kaua‘i’s Week Without Violence. 💜

Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a story we may never fully know. On Kaua‘i, we must continue to make sure survivors are met with compassion, that our keiki feel safe and supported, and that anyone experiencing abuse knows they are not alone.

Mahalo to YWCA Kaua‘i, the Kaua‘i Police Department, Gina Kaulukukui and the Lethality Assessment Program, the Children’s Justice Center, and everyone working to protect and support survivors across our island.

This year’s Week Without Violence theme, “Rising Together: Centering Young Voices to End Gender-Based Violence,” reminds us that building a safer future starts with listening, standing together, and looking out for one another. That is what aloha and caring for our ʻohana is all about.

Let’s continue working toward a Kaua‘i where everyone feels safe, valued, and cared for. 💜
