September marks the release anniversary of a lesser-known chapter in Kauaʻi’s film history: To End All Wars (2001) 🎬

While many moviegoers may not be familiar with this independent WWII drama starring Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Carlyle, the production relied heavily on the Garden Island. To recreate the dense, remote jungle terrain of 1940s Thailand and the infamous Burma Railway, filmmakers chose locations across Kauaʻi: including the historic town of Kōloa and local river valleys to double for South Asia.

Though it had a quiet festival debut and a limited theatrical run, the film stands as a compelling example of how Kauaʻi’s versatile natural scenery can transform to tell powerful historical stories from around the globe.

It’s , and we’re throwing it back to when Hollywood legend Rita Hayworth came to Kauaʻi to shoot the musical drama Miss Sadie Thompson!

Filmed across the island in May 1953 in vivid Technicolor 3-D, the romantic movie featured iconic local locations including Hanalei Bay, Wailua Beach, and Kalapaki Beach. The production team even called in local fire crews to help create rainstorms on set!

Did you know that some of Kauai’s most memorable movies actually started on the printed page? And over the years, filmmakers have repeatedly turned to Kauaʻi to bring those worlds to life.

Our island has served as the setting for several popular adaptations, including Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park and Kaui Hart Hemmings’ The Descendants. It’s always fun seeing a story you read on the page come to life on screen right here at home.

: During the production of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, key search scenes for the Fountain of Youth were filmed entirely on location across Kauaʻi, including the historic grounds of Allerton Garden and the wet caves of the North Shore.

To bring the film's high-seas atmosphere to life, the production held an open casting call in Līhuʻe, hiring hundreds of local Kauaʻi residents to serve as background extras. Many local cast members even arrived at auditions in their own period outfits before joining the cast and crew on set.

Last month marked the 45th Anniversary for Body Heat!

Released in 1981, this classic thriller starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner brought 80s neo-noir mystery to the big screen. While the story was set in Florida, production traveled to Kauaʻi's North Shore to film scenic beach moments along Mākua (Tunnels) Beach.

: When Silence Becomes The Song

Storytelling meets conservation in this powerful documentary directed by Kauaʻi’s Ella Marcil. The film follows a team of biologists and videographers hiking through the rain-soaked Alakaʻi Plateau on a mission to save Kauaʻi’s endangered ʻakikiki bird. It’s an eye-opening look at the dedication required to protect our island’s rarest native species.
