The 1976 Seventh Circuit case, Jenkins v. Blue Cross Mutual Hospital Insurance, Inc., is largely recognized as the first time the American justice system tied natural hair discrimination and illegal race discrimination together. In 2020 the Nebraska Legislature passed, and Governor Ricketts signed, LB 451 for our state acknowledging race is inclusive of characteristics such as skin color, hair texture, and protective hairstyles including braids, locks and twists.
This Black History Month, we encourage you to reach out to our agency if you believe you have been discriminated against at work because of your protective hair or hairstyle, or if you've been discriminated against in housing, public accommodations, or employment for any other protected class reason covered under Nebraska law. https://neoc.nebraska.gov/contact/contact.html
