Dr. Stephanie Goodrich was recognized as a Champion of Disability Employment for her outstanding commitment to providing students with disabilities with meaningful workplace opportunities and deep community connections.

Dr. Goodrich wears many professional hats, balancing roles across business, management, and higher education. She serves as the General Manager of Oak View Mall in Omaha, owns two locations of The Brunch Box (well-known for its robotic food server, "Bella"), and teaches future educators as an Adjunct Instructor of Special Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

In every role, Dr. Goodrich actively promotes inclusion and educates local employers on the immense value, talent, and capabilities that individuals with disabilities bring to the workforce. By offering hands-on learning experiences and structured workplace exposure, she bridges the gap between the classroom and a career.

Her impactful work directly supports the mission of Nebraska VR by fostering independence, expanding competitive employment opportunities, and building a more inclusive community where everyone has the chance to succeed. Dr. Goodrich is a premier role model, showing how dedication and collaborative leadership create lasting, positive change.

Made New Makerspace was honored with Disability Employment and Inclusion Small Business Award

Based in Omaha, Made New Makerspace is a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering foster care and underserved youth—including those with disabilities—through learning, collaboration, and creativity. Operating primarily out of its F Street location, the organization recently expanded its footprint by merging with another local makerspace group earlier this spring. The organization was recognized with the Small Business Award for its work to provide opportunities for work-based learning.

Over the past year, Made New Makerspace has become a vital partner to Nebraska VR by providing hands-on learning opportunities. Operating with just two to three employees alongside a dedicated network of volunteers, the organization has hosted 14 paid work-based learning experiences for 11 students, coordinated a dozen facility tours, and facilitated specialized summer training tracks in introductory welding and computer programming.

Students engaged in these paid experiences work 12 to 15 hours per week. Their duties bridge community engagement and technical skill-building, ranging from inventory management and facility maintenance to advanced projects like 3-D printing, laser engraving, sewing, computer-aided drafting, and podcasting.

Their community-driven initiatives and their work supporting the mission of Nebraska VR provide valuable employability skills, technology access, and independent living skills.

In celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month this October, the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) received the Disability Employment and Inclusion New Business Award, presented annually by Nebraska VR in partnership with the State Rehabilitation Council (SRC). The honor recognizes the agency’s leadership in opening doors for job seekers with disabilities through active collaboration, workplace mentorship, and innovative recruitment strategies.

The partnership began just six months ago when Captain Monty Lovelace from the Nebraska State Patrol faced challenges filling positions requiring day-to-day consistency. Recognizing Nebraska VR supports individuals who thrive in routine environments but often encounter systemic barriers during standard application and interview procedures, Monty connected with a Nebraska VR Employment Specialist to bridge the gap.

To evaluate fit and build practical skills without the pressure of an immediate high-stakes interview, NSP utilized an On-the-Job Evaluation (OJE) with a job seeker. A recent bachelor’s graduate with a strong desire to work for NSP completed a two-week OJE, followed by a temporary position. During her temporary tenure, Monty worked with her for about a month on interview skills and position-specific tasks so she had hands-on experience by the time a permanent opening became available. The candidate successfully earned a permanent, full-time role with full state benefits, marking a thriving start to her career.

Following this initial success, Monty and the NSP team, including their Human Resources staff, expanded their collaboration across multiple initiatives. They hosted several OJEs over the past six months, providing valuable real-world assessments. In addition, they have facilitated workplace tours and job-shadowing opportunities for job seekers exploring state government roles. The NSP team also conducted informational interviews and provided ongoing consultation for Nebraska VR counselors, placement specialists, and Pre-Employment Transition Services staff.

Even when permanent openings are unavailable, participants consistently report positive, empowering experiences in the agency's welcoming environment.
