In the beginning (prior to 1962) when a house fire happened outside the city limits of Lincoln, The Lincoln FD would respond to the call with a single engine carrying only 300 gallons of water. Mildred Whitcomb, her son, Lee Whitcomb Jr., Bob Colin Sr. Harold Claytor along with a number of other folk in the areas on the south and east side of Lincoln, decided , in 1962, to take action. Ready to race?? The 49th Lincoln Marathon and Half Marathon is on Sunday. These are the maps you’ll want to save for details about the starting line, full course and finish line.

The race starts at 14th and Vine Streets at 6:55 a.m. on May 3. Lincoln Police are working closely with our partner agencies to prepare throughout the week and on Race Day. As you’re planning, remember there will be various road closures during the marathon. It’s a team effort to make this a fun and memorable day for our racers with minimal impact on the community.

Road openings and race day photos will be posted LIVE on so make sure to follow us on X. If you’re not participating, grab a seat along the route and cheer on everyone who has put in so much work to prepare for Sunday. 🏃‍♂️👨‍🦽🚶‍♂️

🚒 2026 Nebraska State Fire School – Registration Update

Pre-registration for the 2026 Nebraska State Fire School has closed — but don’t worry! You can still register on-site beginning Friday, May 15 at 7:00 AM.

If you need to change your class, adjustments can also be made on-site starting Friday, May 15 at 7:00 AM.

⚕️ Health & Safety Check Required:
The following classes require a health safety check the day of Fire School prior to class starting:

Participants should arrive between 7:00–11:00 AM to complete the required health safety check. Classes begin at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 15.

⚠️ Important SCBA Requirement:
Individuals with beards, sideburns, or hairstyles that interfere with the proper seal of a breathing apparatus face piece will not be allowed to participate in classes requiring SCBA use. Protective hoods worn over beards are not approved.

📜 Class Certification:
Certain classes require mandatory hours of attendance. Students should make every effort to attend the full 12 hours of instruction. Unless otherwise indicated, students must attend at least 9 hours to receive a letter of certification, which will be mailed to the student’s fire department. Attendance is recorded daily.

No burn permits will be issued this week.

UPDATE: The Statewide ban has been lifted. As a department we are not issuing burn permits at this time. Keep an eye on our website and social media sites for updates.

The ban on open burning has been extended to April 10th, 2026 at 11:59 PM. Executive Order issued by Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen is listed in the comments.
