Turning 65? Your health care coverage may be changing—but your VA health care benefits don’t go away. As Veterans approach age 65, they may have questions about how VA health care, Medicare and TRICARE For Life (TFL) work together. The right combination depends on your individual circumstances.

A few things to keep in mind:
-Medicare enrollment timing matters, and delaying enrollment may result in penalties in some circumstances.
-VA health care is its own health care system. Medicare generally does not pay for care you receive at VA facilities.
-For eligible military retirees, TRICARE For Life generally requires Medicare Part A and Part B.
-VA health care and TRICARE For Life can work together—enrolling in one does not cancel the other.
-Your health care needs and coverage may change over time, so it’s important to review your options before turning 65.

🇺🇸 VETERAN BURIAL BENEFITS: MYTHS & FACTS 🇺🇸

MYTH #6:
This sounds simple, but there's actually quite a bit of confusion surrounding military funeral honors.

THE FACT:
For an eligible Veteran, the minimum military funeral honors detail consists of two uniformed members of the Armed Forces, with at least one representing the Veteran's branch of service.
The minimum ceremony includes:
🇺🇸 Folding and presentation of the American flag
🇺🇸 The playing of “Taps”
A r***e detail is an additional element and may be provided when available.

And here's another common misconception:
What many people call a “21-gun salute” at a Veteran's funeral is actually a three-volley r***e salute.

A traditional r***e detail may consist of seven members firing three volleys — resulting in 21 shots. That's why the two are often confused. 🇺🇸

Unfortunately, a full r***e detail isn't always available for every service. Military personnel have scheduling and availability limitations, and Veterans Service Organizations and other authorized volunteer groups may help provide additional honor elements, including r***e details, when military personnel aren't available.
