🎓 INAUGURATION WEEK | A LOOK BACK THROUGH BETHANY’S HISTORY 💙💛

As we celebrate Inauguration Week at Bethany College, we’re taking a moment to look back at a piece of Bethany history.

In 1943, Bethany gathered at Bethany Lutheran Church for the Installation Service of Dr. Emory Lindquist as President of Bethany College. Held on September 21, 1943, the service included hymns, music, an address from Kansas Conference President Dr. Victor Spong, and Dr. Lindquist’s own message, “Things Truly Believed.”

The program is a beautiful reminder that presidential inaugurations at Bethany have long been more than ceremonies, they are moments to pause, reflect on our heritage and look ahead with hope and purpose.

📖 Swipe through this historic program from 1943 and join us as we celebrate the legacy of leadership that continues to shape Bethany College.

This week, we honor where we have been, celebrate where we are and look forward to where we are going together. Learn more about ALL of the inauguration and Homecoming activities at bethanylb.edu/inaguration

🎶 Celebrating a Life of Music, Faith, and Service

Bethany College is proud to highlight an article written by alumna Linda Martin honoring the life and legacy of Walter Luther Pelz (1926–2026), a gifted musician, composer, educator, and longtime member of the Bethany College community.

Published in the Summer 2026 issue of CrossAccent, the article celebrates Pelz’s remarkable contributions to music and ministry, including his years as a professor of music and college organist at Bethany College. His influence extended beyond the classroom through his compositions, church music ministry, and dedication to sharing the power of music and faith with others.

A Bethany College graduate herself, Linda Martin has devoted her career to music education, performance, and community outreach. We are proud to see our alumni sharing meaningful stories that preserve the history and legacy of those who have shaped our community.

Thank you, Linda, for honoring Walter Pelz’s extraordinary life and the lasting impact he made on Bethany College and beyond. 💙💛

🎉 Happy Founder’s Day, Bethany! 💙💛

On October 15, 1881, Bethany College was founded in Lindsborg, Kansas beginning a story of faith, education, community and opportunity that continues more than 145 years later.

Bethany’s first classes were held in the sacristy of Bethany Lutheran Church, but founder Rev. Carl Swensson quickly recognized the need for a larger space. He purchased the old public schoolhouse to serve as the Bethany Academy building, providing a home for the growing educational mission.

A charter for the college was authorized by the State of Kansas in September 1882, and on October 4, 1882, the new Academy building was dedicated.

The dedication was quite an occasion. The celebration was conducted entirely in Swedish, reflecting the heritage and community that gave birth to Bethany. So many people gathered for the festivities that some spectators had to stand outside the building to take part!

The program from that historic dedication offers a wonderful glimpse into Bethany’s earliest days and the people whose vision, faith and determination helped establish this college on the Kansas prairie.

As we celebrate Founder’s Day, we remember where we began and all those who have carried the Bethany story forward.

Founded October 15, 1881.
Still rising. Still serving. Still Bethany.

💙💛 Happy Founder’s Day, Swedes!
