This looks like a very informative - and important - presentation about the MN Constitutional question that is on everyone's ballot. Join our neighbors in Willmar on Thursday 10/8.
Before you vote on a permanent change to Minnesota’s Constitution, take one hour to understand exactly what it does.
THE BALLOT TELLS YOU SCHOOLS WILL RECEIVE MORE MONEY.
But does it tell you everything that will change?
School districts across Minnesota are promoting the additional funding they could receive if the constitutional amendment passes—and understandably so. But voters aren’t merely approving one year’s additional payment.
They are being asked to permanently change how money may be distributed from Minnesota’s $2.3 billion Permanent School Fund.
The proposal would:
• Increase the initial distribution to 4.5% of the fund’s three-year average value
• Replace the current interest-and-dividends formula
• Place the specific distribution policy in state law, where future legislatures could change it
• Require the fund to remain perpetual and preserve its purchasing power for future students
How much would your local district actually receive? How significant is that amount compared with its overall budget? What protects the fund during an extended market downturn? And how much discretion should future legislatures have over the distribution rate?
These are reasonable questions—and Minnesota voters deserve the full story before changing our state constitution.
Join us Thursday, October 8, as Mark Kulda of Center of the American Experiment breaks down the amendment in understandable terms and answers questions.
