Congratulations to Elaina, Meeker County's WIC Coordinator, on being named a Minnesota WIC Everyday Hero!

At their regular meeting on September 1, 2026, the Meeker County Board of Commissioners recognized WIC Coordinator Elaina Larson who was named a Minnesota WIC Everyday Hero, a statewide recognition honoring outstanding contributions to the WIC program. Elaina was nominated by a coworker who highlighted her exceptional leadership, integrity and dedication to serving area families. Elaina has been a part of the Meeker County team for 4 years. Congratulations Elaina!

WIC is a federal nutrition program for eligible pregnant women, new parents, breastfeeding parents, infants and children under the age of 5 (WIC stands for women, infants, and children). It provides specific nutritious food, education, support and referrals to health and social services through state and local WIC agencies. Families who may be eligible for the program and are interested in participating can submit a referral form on the County’s website at www.meekercountymn.gov

Did you know that you can access WIC benefits like healthy foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support as soon as you know that you’re pregnant? 🤔
Here are 3 things you can do to prepare for breastfeeding before birth:
💬 Talk with your doctor about breastfeeding and ask if you have any health conditions that could make it more difficult.
🤱 Meet with a lactation consultant. WIC offers lactation support with experts like IBCLCs and peer support with breastfeeding peer counselors.
💗Get a breast pump or breastfeeding supplies. WIC can help provide you with supplies or support you with getting supplies through your health insurance provider.

This Fourth of July marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence! 🇺🇸 While you’re spending time outside with family and friends this weekend, it’s important to stay cool and take care of yourself. 🫶
Here are a few ways you can stay cool and safe in the sun ☀️
🥤Freeze your water before putting it in a cooler or bag to go so it melts and stays chilled while you’re enjoying time outside
🧴 Reapply sunscreen every few hours for the best sun protection
🥒 Bring fruits and veggies with high water content to snack on! This includes cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, cantaloupe, and peaches.
🌅 Time your days for less time in the peak heat hours! Spending time outside in the early morning or in the evening after dinner helps reduce time spent in the heat
