As we close our doors for the 2026 season, we wanted to look back at all this year brought us. It is an honor to celebrate and commemorate 250 years of our nation and shared history that ground us to today.

Starting in April, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of our Sugaring Off programming founded in 1976 during the bicentennial. In June, we witnessed the rededication of our monument by the NYS Grand Lodge of Free Masons in a beautiful and touching event. We gathered together to celebrate 250 years of independence on July 4th for a weekend full of patriotic remembrance.

Over the next few months, we traveled off-site to join Little Falls for Canal Days, the Mohawk Valley Garlic and Herb Festival, and Cheese Fest, and made our presence known at the Great New York State Fair as part of their 250th programming.

In August, we marked the 249th anniversary of Oriskany and the death of General Herkimer, sharing exciting plans as we look forward to our 250th next year.

Preparing for this, we welcomed and acknowledged the formation of the Tryon County Militia and their Ranger companies in our Militia Muster encampment at the end of August.

September and October saw school programs, our ghost hunt, and charter tours. Finally, the fall breezes brought on Hearth and Harvest, our first harvest festival and the close to the 2026 season.

What a busy year it has been—full of major milestones, touching ceremonies, storied history, great friends, and new memories. From all of us here are Herkimer Home, we want to say thank you for another great year. We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

See you next year, and happy 250th!

Long before the Halloween traditions of today Irish folklore spoke of Stingy Jack who, due to his devilish dealings, was condemned to roam the earth for all time with only an ember of flame in the night. He placed this ember in a carved turnip to light his way as he wandered forever. Irish folklore tradition continued to use carved turnips to ward off evil spirits during the ancient celebrations surrounding Samhain.

Today many of these centuries old traditions have morphed into the holiday fun surrounding carved pumpkins, trick or treating, and disguising ourselves each Halloween.

Join us this weekend as we discuss these and many of the harvest traditions of the colonial age at our Hearth and Harvest, 18th Century Harvest Fest.

Join Herkimer Home throughout our closing weekend as we celebrate the colonial harvest! Walk our grounds as the seasons turn and the leaves start to fall as we demonstrate the many trades, skills, and activities associated with the 18th century harvest, including food preservation, hearth cooking, and other preparations for the winter ahead. Our Palatine Agriculture program will be a central feature to the weekend’s festivities as guests learn about various tools of the trade, common vegetables, livestock, and skills of the 18th century farmer.

Additional programming helps bring the 18th century Mohawk Valley to life, including colonial brewing, blacksmithing, Palatine foodways, and of course open house mansion tours. To celebrate the season, you are also invited to take part in pumpkin bowling, colonial children’s toys and games, and a pumpkin carving station! As the leaves change and start to fall, come enjoy all that Fall has to offer at this year’s Harvest Fest at Herkimer Home.

Don't miss these activities and more throughout our closing weekend from 10am-4pm each day, including Indigenous People’s Day! Programming is suitable for all ages, so bring the family and let’s celebrate Hearths and Harvests together. See you there!

250 years ago today-

“September 28, 1776. Feeling very unwell. Nothing material.” -Capt. J. Bloomfield

Such a way with words, Joseph.🫡

250 years ago the 3rd New Jersey and Capt. Joseph Bloomfield have been rebuilding Fort Schuyler for almost a month. The repetitiveness of the job left many bored, upset, and feeling as though they have been making no difference for the cause as they rebuild fortifications for months. Little did they know, come August 1777, Fort Schuyler will withstand a long siege due to their work refortifyinf the garrison a year prior.

But still, while on campaign in the New York frontier, many will come in contact with different peoples, and more importantly, disease, weather, and limited nutrition their bodies were not used to. Bloomfield, like many others, face illness for months and have to continue on with their daily tasks while on campaign. The repetitiveness of each day, combined with the headaches, stomach diseases, being bled, insects, and rashes, lead many Jerseymen feeling desperate to get home. But for them, they must serve another 6 months away from their homes through a hard winter.
