“Daily Cup of Joe”
Leadership isn’t about doing everyone’s job. It’s about trusting the people you’ve chosen to help you get the job done.
One of the most important responsibilities of any leader is surrounding themselves with capable people, giving them clear expectations, and then allowing them to do the jobs they’ve been entrusted to do.
In law enforcement, a strong command staff is essential to the success of an agency. As Chief, I believe it’s my responsibility to provide direction, offer guidance, and hold people accountable. But it’s equally important that I support my command staff and give them the authority and confidence to make decisions within their areas of responsibility.
You can’t expect someone to lead if you’re constantly looking over their shoulder, questioning every decision, or undermining their authority.
That doesn’t mean we will always agree. It doesn’t mean mistakes won’t happen. It simply means that trust, communication, and mutual respect must flow both ways.
A good leader knows when to step in, but a great leader also knows when to step aside and let others lead.
At the end of the day, my job isn’t to create followers who depend on me for every decision. It’s to develop leaders who are confident, capable, and committed to doing what’s right.
Leadership isn’t about having all the control. It’s about building a team you can trust!
