Metroplan Metroplan is the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) for Central Arkansas. Central Arkansas is growing. Change is inevitable.

The first question Metroplan asks every day is how to plan for that growth. Metroplan’s goal is to ensure that those changes are beneficial to the economic health, growth, and vibrancy of our region. In a global economy, our metropolitan region is in competition with every other metropolitan region on earth. The smarter we plan for the future, the better prepared our communities will be. Metroplan’s role in this effort is to provide a regional forum for solving common problems and seizing common opportunities. Metroplan serves the core of central Arkansas – with an emphasis on Pulaski, Faulkner, Saline, and Lonoke counties. Metroplan is also the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization responsible for the transportation planning process in central Arkansas.

Planning for Safer Roads 🚦

Metroplan’s Central Arkansas Safety Action Plan uses crash data, public input, and analysis to identify roadway safety challenges throughout the four-county region.

The plan looks at where serious crashes are happening, why they may be occurring, and what communities can do to improve safety for everyone using the transportation system.

The Safety Action Plan has informed Road Safety Audits and additional safety planning throughout Central Arkansas.

This is planning in action:

📊 Analyze the data.
🗣️ Listen to the community.
🔎 Identify the challenges.
💡 Develop solutions.
🏗️ Move toward implementation.

🏠 Planning for the people who call Central Arkansas home.

Housing is more than where we live. It is connected to transportation, jobs, schools, infrastructure, neighborhood development, and economic opportunity.

APA is highlighting housing as a critical part of community planning, particularly as communities work to address housing supply and affordability challenges.

Here in Central Arkansas, understanding our changing population and housing needs is an important part of planning for the future. Metroplan’s Metrotrends research helps communities better understand how the region is changing.

Planning helps us ask the important questions:

🏘️ What types of housing will our communities need?
📍 Where should new housing be located?
🚌 How can housing connect people to transportation and opportunity?
🌱 How can we grow while creating livable communities?

Planning for housing means planning for the people who make Central Arkansas home.

Planning in Action

📈 Seeing how your community is changing, is crucial to planning for its future.

That’s where Metrotrends comes in.

Metroplan’s demographic and economic research informs Central Arkansas communities about population growth, household trends, employment, housing, and other factors that influence the regions development.

The newly released 2026 Demographic Review and Outlook takes a closer look at the future of housing — including household growth, housing construction, changing household sizes, and where new development is occurring.

Why does that matter to planning?

🏠 Housing needs
🚗 Transportation demand
🏫 Community services
💼 Employment
🛣️ Infrastructure
🌱 Land development

🏙️ October is American Planning Association National Community Planning Month!

So…what exactly does a planner do?

Planning is about looking beyond today and thinking about what our communities need tomorrow. It connects housing, transportation, land use, economic development, infrastructure, the environment, and quality of life to support communities and inform decisions about their future.

At Metroplan, that work happens on a regional scale. We bring together cities, counties, transportation leaders, and community partners across Central Arkansas to look at challenges and opportunities for growth that benefits everyone in the region. Throughout October, we’re going behind the plans to highlight the studies, data, projects, and people that help shape Central Arkansas.

Planning is about people — and building a Central Arkansas where communities can grow, connect, and thrive together.

Happy National Community Planning Month! 🗺️🌱

🔄 National Roundabout Week: Saline County

Roundabouts aren't just about keeping traffic moving — they're also about designing intersections with safety in mind. In Saline County, roundabouts are part of a transportation network connecting growing communities, neighborhoods, businesses and destinations throughout the region.

By reducing conflict points and encouraging slower vehicle speeds, roundabouts can help create intersections that are safer for drivers and more predictable for everyone using the roadway.

That focus on safety is central to Metroplan’s Safety Action Plan, which works toward reducing fatalities and serious injuries on roads throughout Central Arkansas through data-driven strategies and investments in safer transportation infrastructure.

🔄 National Roundabout Week: Lonoke County

As Central Arkansas continues to grow beyond the region’s urban core, transportation safety remains a priority for communities throughout Lonoke County. Roundabouts offer one way communities can improve intersection safety while keeping people and traffic moving efficiently.

Their design can reduce vehicle speeds and eliminate several high-risk crossing and turning movements found at traditional intersections — creating a transportation system designed with safety in mind.

That approach aligns with Metroplan’s Safety Action Plan, which brings communities across Central Arkansas together around a shared goal: reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries and building a safer regional transportation system for everyone.
