The front lawn of The Atkins-Johnson Farm and Museum, where the Big Shoal Country Fair would be set up, has been soaked by the ongoing rain. With more expected overnight and tomorrow during the event, the decision has been made to cancel the Fair. We’re disappointed too ☹️ HOWEVER...
The Museum will still be open from 11a to 4p. Always FREE Admission
AND
The Big Shoal Farm Pumpkin Field will be open - hours TBA

So happy we were able to honor Eugene this morning in spite of the weather.

He's created something special at The Big Shoal Farm and I'm excited to see his legacy continue.

Last week I joined Mayor Jean Moore and Councilman Les Smith at the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce's Monthly Luncheon, where we heard a heartfelt presentation from Dan Meers, the man behind KC Wolf.

Dan shared stories from his life and his years as one of the most beloved mascots in sports, along with the personal and professional challenges he has overcome. I connected with his story more than I expected.

What inspires me most is how Dan uses his talents and time to lift others up, supporting children and people in need here in Kansas City, across the country, and around the world. It's a powerful reminder of what one person can do for their community.

Thank you to the Northland Regional Chamber of Commerce for bringing our business and civic leaders together, and to Dan for an inspiring afternoon.

I recently finished The Corporation in the 21st Century by John Kay, and it's a great read for anyone who cares about how local economies really work.

Kay's big idea: the most successful businesses today aren't built on buildings, machinery or money alone. They're built on people, shared know-how, and the trust between a business and the community it serves.

That rings true here in Gladstone. Our local businesses thrive because of the relationships they build with neighbors, customers and each other. As we keep working to support small business and economic growth in our city, that's a lesson worth holding onto.

Have a book that's shaped how you think about community or business? Share it in the comments. I'm always looking for the next good read.

Last weekend I joined Kanbe's Markets, KC Food Hub, KC Can Compost, and Urban Produce Push for their Hunger Action Month Pancake Breakfast in Kansas City β€” a great chance to connect with the broader food-access community and learn more about efforts to fight hunger and food waste across our region.

Kanbe's Markets is a partner worth knowing about right here in Gladstone: they work with our local Walmart and Hy-Vee to rescue surplus produce that would otherwise end up in a landfill, and redirect it to neighbors who need it. That fresh, rescued food shows up close to home too β€” Kanbe's stocks two healthy food stores right here in Gladstone, at the Stop N Shop on N Oak and at Barakah Halal.

It's a simple, powerful model: less food waste, more fresh food access, stronger community. Grateful for partners like Kanbe's doing this work in the Northland. πŸ₯žπŸŽ

🌳 Gladstone Parks Board Updates

Thanks to everyone who joined us at last night's Parks Board meeting β€” attendance was a little lighter than usual with the Chiefs' Monday Night Football matchup (and what a game β€” a stunning 31-10 win with some great action from the new players)!

🌿 Parks Shoutout: A huge thank you to our Parks Superintendent and the entire Parks Team for their incredible work keeping our parks maintained through the brutal August and early September heat. They completed 45 work orders in August alone β€” that's dedication!

🌸 Flora Park Update: Phase 1 of the Flora Park project is wrapping up! Phase 2 bids have been received and are currently under review for compliance with our grant partners. We're still on track for a Fall 2026 completion.
